FRUA on a Platform
« on: March 11, 2010, 07:17:47 PM »
Just curious as converting a FRUA design from PC to Mac has proven to be consuming a lot more time than I thought it would.  Feel free to elaborate on the importance of cross-platform converting, as you wish.  And thanks for voting!  :)

Never used FRUA on a Mac, but I have run it on a PC running Windows and a PC running Linux and a PC running DOS.  Does that count?

I ask because I'm not sure if you're asking for machine types or operating systems (in which case, I have run FRUA in Windows, Linux and DOS).  If you mean machines...well, "PC" is a very generic term (even a Mac is a PC).  But, most importantly, I don't think there's another machine platform that FRUA works on (it was never ported to the Commodore 64, the Atari ST, or the Atari 2600).

So, asking for clarification.

Hey Ben sorry I should have been more clear on that - I was speaking generally between the PC and the Mac platforms (and possibly a linux user or two) as those are the only two I know of personally that host FRUA users in our midst, but I could very well be wrong and that is why I invited elaboration if that was the case.  As it stands, I see one of us voted 'other' but didn't elaborate, so... I see how well my logic has worked out.  :)

I voted "Other" because I have run FRUA in Linux using DOSBox.

The point I was trying to make in my other reply was that you have listed "PC" as one of the options...which covers a whole slew of things.  I have a PC in my house that can run Windows, Linux, DOS and Mac OS X (you don't always need a Mac to run that operating system).  So, which would be the right answer when they are all on a standard PC?

I suggest changing the poll answers to read:

Windows
Mac OS
Linux
DOS
Other

Since there are separate mac and PC sections on rosedragon, I guess the mac and PC versions of FRUA are not compatible, are they?

Yep Ben J has the right of it.  I was asking due to designs (et al) being available on the UA File Archive for PC platform and Mac platform.  The files I am working with are pretty hefty, so converting between the two entails a lot more work than I expected it would, so I thought I would put it to poll to field a response and see.

Okay, I understand what you're getting at now (guess I'm just thick).  Now I'm confused as to why there is an "other" category when FRUA was only ever released for the PC and the MAC?

I don't think you are 'thick' at all Ben... far from it.

I added the 'other' category for folks who run FRUA on an emulator, or for those of us FRUAite pollsters who just have to have that third option in a poll (this is actually far more common than I thought, perusing past polls).

I don't see any confusion going on here at all?
