A file archive for DC?
« on: February 07, 2010, 11:23:25 AM »
Re-installing the contest mods on my harddisk today made me recall the trouble some of us had to share these mods with each other and get them to run. The files uploaded at the Ironworks forum needed to be downloaded more than once in order to be complete and the archives also got partly corrupted, so that authors retroactively had to supply a couple of missing files for the downloaders. Uploading mods here or at the UA File Archive was impossible because of the mod size (e.g. mine is about 20 mb in size). Of course, DC artists like Dinonykos, manikus, uatu etc. all have their own website where they can put files for download but still...

I'm wondering if there isn't any possibility to create a (free?) archive for DC like the UA File Archive where all files are assembled and you can easily up- and download single archive files even if they're large in size, without the need to split them or any other workaround. Just one site to go to, just download, unzip and play.

What do you think?

'Tis a marvelous idea.

Designs should be self-contained and in one piece.

I have space if you want to use it.
Polite people can upload to:
http://dianneandpaul.net/DungeonCraft/Designs

Polite people can provide a password for
upload.  I'll change the site password
temporarily so you can upload then change
it back for my peace-of-mind.

It might be a pain - but the price is right.

Thanks a lot, Paul! I'll get back to you once I'm ready to upload my design.

Sounds not that painful... Thank you very much for that option. Would it even be okay to upload designs with - let's say - 50MB? I have roughly calculated that my contest entry would be that big if I added voice acting to some events...

I don't think size is any problem until
we have uploaded a couple dozen
50MB files.  Let's give it a try.

EDIT******
I just looked.  I have a 300 GB limit and
am using 650 MB.  So there should be space.

If people have a problem downloading
such things......I can mail a CD most
anywhere for a dollar.

Rosedragon also has a DC section: http://frua.rosedragon.org/dc/

I don't know if the size of the files will be a problem there, though.

Wow, Paul! Thanks a bunch. I will get my ducks in a row and hopefully in the next week or two I will have 3 or 4 designs to upload. :)

As for the Rosedragon archive, it's great for all non-design related DC stuff, but the small file upload size would keep me from uploading most of the mini-mod test designs that Paul and I use - these have almost all of the art stirpped out of them.

You know, I need to ask Mr. Brobst why that limit is in place for the FRUA archive.  If it's just a holdover from something in the past, maybe we can change it to something more current.

That would be great, Donnie. :) I like the idea of storing FRUA and DC stuff together so that people can go back and forth between the two platforms very easily.

Jusging from this contest that is just passed, the designs were in the 15 to 20 MB range. I don't know it that's too large to ask for or not, but at least you'll have some idea of size.
