Oh my gosh! I just realized what today is. Here's a villain to honor the day. ;D

What would be your ideal real-historical-figures party, and then ideal your literary-fictional-characters party?   :)

My Real-Historical-Figures party might include:

Sgt. York
William Wallace (Braveheart)
Fong Sai Yuk (a famous fighter from Shaolin)
Annie Oakley
Sasaki Kojiro (samurai Musashi's chief rival)
Harry Houdini

--although I might as easily pick:

Gen. George Washington
Yagyu Jubei Mitsuyoshi (famous samurai, perhaps ninja)
Elliot Ness (leader of the Untouchables)
Bat Masterson
Spartacus
Amelia Earhart
Judge Dee (famous imperial Chinese detective)
Francis of Assisi
Sacagawea
Dr. Wong Fei Hung (1847–1924, famous kung-fu good guy)
Leif Ericson
Davey Crockett
Melvin Purvis (famous G-man)
Pochahontas
Jesse Owens (black athelete who ruined Hitler's olympics)
and, of course, Elvis

Out of respect, I wouldn't include any Biblical historical characters.

My Fictional-Literary-Historical Party would possibly include:

Sam Spade
Beowulf
Sherlock Holmes
Hopalong Cassidy
Will Scarlet
Comte de Rochefort (musketeers bad guy who turned good)

--also in the running:

Sindbad
Tarzan
Mr. Moto
Zorro
Ben-Hur
Shane
Ivanhoe
James Bond
Hamlet
Charlie Chan

...It's funny, I can't think of any literary fictional women to include in my party, as opposed to historical women.  Maybe I'm not well-read enough.
 :P

Now, same categories (but putting it closer to topic), who would be the villains in such a mod...?

In a party consisting of fictional characters, I would always include Batman, because of this:

Literary-fictional (you get to decide whether heroes or villains):

Lilith
Odysseus
Don Quixote de la Mancha
Captain Ahab
Professor Moriarty
Merlin
Long John Silver
Robinson Crusoe
Lady MacBeth and/or the Wyrd Sisters
Faust and/or Mephistopheles
Auguste Dupin (predecessor of Sherlock Holmes)
Huckleberry Finn
Alice, The Mad Hatter & the Queen of Hearts
Arsène Lupin
Gregor Samsa   ;)
and - in case anyone knows who that is - the terrible Count Olaf   ;D

Plus two arbitrary historical villains:

Caligula
Jack the Ripper

What would be your ideal real-historical-figures party, and then ideal your literary-fictional-characters party?   :)

My Historical Figures party includes some still living:

William Fairbairn
Carlos Hathcock
Harry Houdini
Richard Marcinko
Hoot Gibson
Tim Wilkinson

I concentrated on small unit tactics, stealth, and firepower.

William Fairbairn - Royal Marine/Shanghai Municipal Police -  developed the Defendu martial art system and numerous counter-insurgent/counter-terrorist techniques still in use today.
Carlos Hathcock - USMC - Legendary Marine sniper.
Harry Houdini - The man knew locks, as well as all sorts of tricks.
Richard Marcinko - USN - Founder of Seal Team Six, Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC)
Hoot Gibson - USA - Team Leader, Delta Force (JSOC)
Tim Wilkinson - USAF - Pararescueman, 24 STS (JSOC), awarded Air Force Cross for his actions in Mogadishu. He also makes excellent beer.

With the probable exception of Houdini, all are well versed in the use of blades and garrotes, and in weaponless combat.

My party of ancients (BCE) would include:

Sun Tsu
Alexander
Horatius of Rome
Julias Caeser
Hannibal
Vercingetorix the Celt

The tricky part here would be to keep them from killing each other. I'd put Sun Tsu in charge. Maybe I should have given him Li Po for backup?

I didn't do fictional characters because it was getting too silly, too quickly.
Some days it just doesn't pay to gnaw through the straps.

Excellent list, hans. :) Harri Houdini is a brilliant choice.

I listed names of famous individuals, but really it's people that I've never heard of that would probably be the best - like a Navy SEAL team, or Army Rangers. :)

For the villains

Historical:

Jack the Ripper
Zodiac Killer, Son of Sam, etc
Hitler
Stalin
Mussolini
Pol Pot

Fictional:

Voldemort
Dr. Doom
Agent Smith
Cersei Lannister Baretheon
Cassanova Frankenstein
Grogori Rasputin (Hellboy)

That's a nice list, hans. :)

Someone else I just thought of for historical: the Marquis de Sade.

I thought of Caligula as well, but didn't add it to my list, but I see he is on yours. I started thinking that most of the Roman emperors could go on the list, and then I started thinking that most of the French leaders from the Reconnaissance right up until the start of the 1900s could go on the list, and then I realized that depending on who you ask, most world leaders could be on the list. ;D

I'm not familiar with the Ultraverse line, but I like what I'm seeing. I like seeing villains I'm unfamiliar with, it gives me a good excuse to read up about comic books. :)

It would be fun to do a design where you cuold run into all kinds of historical characters, either real or fictional, or even both.

What would be your ideal real-historical-figures party, and then ideal your literary-fictional-characters party?   :)
|sf>I've been a little late reading this thread, but I wanted to add a few characters.  I think the ideal party in either case would depend upon the genre and challenges required for the module.  A module that requires searching for something elusive would be a much different party composition than a module requiring strategies in conquering an army.

Literary heroes:

Phileas Fogg
Robin Hood

Literary villains:

Dr. Moreau
Madame Defarge
Wolf Larsen
Erik (Phantom)

Literary misc:

Captain Nemo (could be either, depending on circumstances)

I'll have to add to this later to fill out the lists.  I think that most of the interesting historical figures have already been mentioned.  I also think it would be interesting to think of what class some of these heroes/villains would be within.
