PREVIEW: The Sect
« on: June 10, 2009, 07:29:48 PM »
Today I took the evening off to play around with framedit and created a frame for "The Sect". It's plain, but at least it's easy on the eyes. In addition, I stole the font from "Dark Alliances".

This enables me to present the first few screenshots from "The Sect", from parts of the game that are already translated.

Pic 1: The title screen in action.

Pic 2: Conversation with a grumpy vampire.

Pic 3: Looking up stuff in the library.

Pic 4: Fun with bards.

Wow, this looks really great.  I'm definitely going to add it to my "must play" list.

In addition, I stole the font from "Dark Alliances".

Well, technically nobody steals anything here.  We have a pretty open policy about sharing.

And also, that font was created by someone else anyway.  It's the font from "Treasures of the Savage Frontier," I believe, which matches the frameset in "AT1: Dark Alliances."

So, you didn't steal anything at all.

Thanks for your encouragement. :)

Don't expect a playtest version before the end of the year, though. There's still a lot to do.

Yeah, I know, I was only joking.

But I couldn't find the font on corhub, so I just copied it out of the DA folder. Of all the fonts I tried, this was the most easily readable. This is important, since my characters are kind of talkative, so the player will have to read a lot.

I agree on the readability of the font.  That's why I've used it for years.

I'm going on vacation, so you'll have to get along without my constant questions about game bugs and weird color palettes for a while.  ;D

However, I have some more screenshots ready.

The game has made quite some progress since the last time I posted pics. A lot of the art has been changed, and more than a quarter of the game is now translated.

See the pics below.

Pic 1: You can probably guess what happens next...

Pic 2: The map in color. Still looks kinda familiar, but has grown some new mountains recently.

Pic 3: Jaki the Thief. One of my favorite characters, now with brand-new appearance.*

Pic 4: A friendly and helpful town guard.

* Okay, it's not new, if you've ever played Baldur's Gate. But it looks fresh to me.  ;)

Great stuff! I like the Worzen-Tobel pic in particular.

Quick status update:

The translation now stands firmly at 17 completed maps (out of 40), slowly approaching midpoint.

Yes, that's 40 maps, including the four overlands. But two of those are basically halves of the same map, while the other two are used rather creatively.

The bulk of the art is now replaced and brand-new. There will be new music, I've already created the basis for some of the pieces.
There won't be any new walls or backdrops, though, and next to no sophisticated hacks. I hope the writing, pics and music will make up for that.

Plot info

I've recently outlined the complete backstory and timeline of the game, which was a bit fuzzy before, to see if everything makes sense as a whole. I've tweaked things a little, and added some additional stuff to make it saucier, but the basic story remains what it was in the original (actually, I've noticed that the historic backstory of the happenings in the game owes a little to the Lord of the Rings, I didn't even notice that while writing the plot years ago, although I had read the books, of course).

The overall story arc is classic stuff, almost straight out of the hero's journey (which I also wasn't aware of while creating the story structure, but the ingredients are all there).

The party starts out in a rural farming village. They are forced to interrupt their harvesting activities, because one of their friends has gone missing.
This friend has joined a fanatical religious group, an organization which is also rumored to be responsible for conquering some imperial cities in the recent months.

The party decides, rather naively, to rescue their friend from the evil clutches of the sect... by talking him out of it. But where is he? And what are the hidden motives of the evil cult? What about the rumors that they are cave-dwelling, hellhound-breeding baby-eaters?

Looking for their friend, the unsuspecting party is drawn into political intrigues, big battles, minor skirmishes, secondary whippings, and mere bar brawls. Their exploits involve good wizards, evil wizards, neutral wizards, mental wizards, lizards, infamous ogre shamans, grumpy vampires, fiery demons, puny Krepels, various plots to conquer the world, the fine wines of the land, exciting sporting events, exceedingly seedy taverns and Kor's World Famous Shoppe Where You Cannot Buy Anything.

It sounds like quite the romp, with interesting personalities to boot! I'm really looking forward to playing it.

:)

Well, it could be a wild ride, but the game could also be quite leisurely paced, depending on how the player decides to go about. You could just stroll along the countryside for a while, see the sights and maybe rescue some maiden who's completely unrelated to the main plot.

I made a lengthy post on the mailing list on the structure of the game and the similarities to the Ultima games (my favorite RPGs besides the Gold Box series).  I think I could look that up and post it here as well.

Two more screenshots.

The redesign is still going strong.  :)

This is going to be a behemoth of a game. I hope I can finish a playtest version by the end of the year. Still some dungeons to go...
