Screen mock-up?  Sure.  Try to replicate this look (notice the spacing):

EDIT: The closest I've been able to mock the spacing of the original UA was with an unfinished design I was working on for DC with large fonts.  And that was at 640x480, and even it didn't come close (see second picture).

Having a square viewport instead of the 176x211 DC default would solve the issue with the extra space between the characters' names and their AC and HP.

Square viewport?

YOu might find these interesting... ;)

I also got to work on my idea emulate the 640x400 resolution that would be a closer reproduction of the GoldBox games in DC. The screenshot attached is not a mock-up - it's an actual screenshot for a new layout I've worked on this morning. I still need to tweak some of the menus and would likely go with a little smaller font (using Tahoma bold 16 pt in screenshot). If there is interest in this, I can share it. :D I just might use this layout for my GB imports to DC, or wok out a version to fit the 1024x768 screen resolution for DC.

Okay, that's nice.  I would like to see that with a slightly smaller font, though, as you mentioned.  But, that's a really good and impressive start.

Manikus, earlier in the year I added features for exporting wallsets and other data from the gold box games to gold box explorer, although there hasn't been a public release with these features because Bil Simser's been out of touch/presumed busy. If you need help extracting assets from Pool of Radiance (and getting them into a DC friendly format), I can assist.

Being able to extract walls would be a lot easier than screencapping and building them. :D I will gladly accept any help I can get with this.
For a start, here are the Pool of Radiance walls in bitmap format - next I'll look into getting them into the format DC uses. I've tried to group them by the area they're used in, but that's not yet an exact science, so there may be mistakes.

I'm out of town and using dial-up until Tuesday. Would it be possible to get a smaller file size (maybe the graphics format could be changed) or several files? I can certainly wait until I get back into town, but if I don't have to... :D
Thank you so much for doing this - this will save me dozens and dozens of hours.
In regards to whichever format the walls are in, I should be able to convert them to DC usable in no time. I will write a script that will do it for me. :D

Edited to add:

I didn't mean to imply marainein that you had to do this, just that if you could or if someone else could that I would appreciate it. ;)
I've exported them as FRUA style wall templates this time, which had the side effect of reducing the total size. And rather than sorting them into directories based on the area I think they're used in, I've just included that information in a text file in the archive.

And I noticed this just after I uploaded it:
Quote from: manikus
For what it's worth, 350 kb seems to be about the max I can download wihout errors messing it up.
364.38 kB, darnit. Let me know if I you need it split into smaller files.

Further Edit:
I found I could modify the attachments - now split into two files for your downloading convenience.

Square viewport?

Three of the choices in the poll use a square viewport.

640x480 square (264x264 viewport)
800x600 square (352x352 viewport)
1024x768 square (528x528 viewport)

I like your attempt to emulate the Gold Box format, manikus. What would help next would be a fixed width font, something like Courier, but in a medieval style.

Ah!  Yes.  The Medieval-style, fixed-width font.

Sounds a bit like an oxymoron.

What I will probably use (because I can include it for anyone to install on their system) is the FRUA ttf that I made a few years back. It's not really a fixed-width font, but because the majority of the characters are the same width, it will work better. :)

Ah!  Yes.  The Medieval-style, fixed-width font.

Doire and Teamhair are Celtic monospace fonts.

Doire

Teamhair

F25 is a German blackletter font.

These are OK, but I think the best thing would be to create our own monospace font.

Here is a monospace font that can be used with Dungeon Craft if anyone wants to.

The font is all capital letters, and the majority of the characters are 100% FRUA identical. I fixed a few things, like the curly braces {} being identical to the square brackets [] and the tilde ~ being the same as the carat ^. I also added some needed symmetry to the forward slash - backslash and left-hand right-hand parentheses.

The font is called "FRUA.ttf" (see download link below) and it is a TrueType font.

In case you don't love the retro look of block letters, here is another TrueType font (FRUA-2.ttf) with smooth curves and diagonals instead of right angles.
