I suspect the short (immediate) casting time has much to do with the spell's popularity, however the books say it should take seven segments.

So is it a bug to be fixed, or something you prefer to keep?

I like it the way it is - but I'm not an AD&D purist.  ;)

I would like to see it at 7 segments. Does that make me an AD&D purist? ;) I think I'm okay with that.

What's the opposite of an AD&D purist?  :-\

I admit I don't even know what a segment is... and you don't get to cast DBF in a lot of designs anyway. I guess I'd vote for "It's all the same to me." if there was an option for apathetic cowards. ;)

I forgot the Apathetic Coward option!

Can I insert it without clearing the votes?

(A segment is six seconds, by the way. It's why some spells take longer to cast than others.)

I would like to make sure that I'm clear on what the difference is between DBF in 1st edition and in FRUA.

As I understand it, in 1st edition, a DBF is cast immediately (cannot be interrupted). 7 segments later, the Fireball explodes.

In FRUA, the DBF is cast immediately and also explodes immediately.

Is the above correct?

In FRUA, it should be called "Immediate Blast Fireball".

In both 1e and 2e it requires seven segments to cast and can be interrupted. The blast can be delayed from 1 to 50 segments (1/10 to 5 rounds) in 1e, or 0 to 50 segments in 2e.

(I think most people played it as 0-50 in both versions.)

That reminds me, in the first Gold Box game to have Delayed Blast Fireball (SSB?), when you cast DBF, the game gave the player the option of setting the amount of delay (in segments) before the fireball explodes.

I remember that, but I can't remember which game.

IIRC it was a somewhat useful option for allowing other characters time to get out of the way (if you made a good guess on the delay time.  :-\ )

I haven't voted because I'm conflicted.

I like the idea of powerful enemies having such a quick-launch, brutal spell, for the sake of challenging combats, but by the same token, I'd like for the party not to have such an advantage themselves (making too many fights too easy).   :P

I think Silver Blades is the first. :) I loved using it in that game. Except of course when I would misjudge the monsters bravery and my timing, allowing all the mosters to flee before it went off.

I voted to keep DBF the way it currently is in FRUA. Now that I have my rulebooks in front of me, I see that the casting time of a Fireball is only 3 segments, compared to 7 segments for DBF.

Most people will want their DBF to go off instantly after it is cast (we might not even be able to make it delay 1-50 segments using the FRUA engine). So DBF is a level 7 spell that does +1 point of damage per die and takes LONGER to cast. In all other respects it is identical to the 3rd level Fireball spell.
