Actually, yes, I have seriously considered it ... Generally, if I were to do a drawing or painting, trying to make it as good as I can, it is nowhere near professional enough. For that reason I tend to do some pixel-art work like icons and walls, and design/effects stuff using photoshop, but using converted images by professional artists. But using a small child's artwork, I could create a fairly consistent feel that is not trying to be realistic. One challenge would be how to deal with combat icons to make them consistent as well. Anyway, I would need to work out what sort of module I think this would be suited to; not my ever-continuing epic, I think.

Only if you want the design to feature standard UA combat; you could also think of different ways to handle combat or make a design completely without it. Your son could be involved in more than just the drawing of the images, he could also come up with parts of the story himself, and/or decide what kind of game it is, what the players should do in it etc. It will probably have a smaller audience if it's not a traditional goldbox design but something more experimental and kiddy, but I think among the regulars of this forum there would be enough to take an interest nevertheless, and it could be a fun experience for the two of you to work on it together. You could also avoid 3D view if you find it hard to come up with a consistent style for walls and backgrounds, and use a hand drawn overland map instead.

While I regard consistency as very, very important, I never had problems with, e.g., combining comic-style viewport graphics with pixel-art-style combat graphics. Furthermore, I think there could be ways to transfer a child's paintings to icons with some effort.
