Character Creation Bugs
« on: October 10, 2015, 01:17:19 AM »
When creating a character I accidentally stumbled upon the following issues.

When using TAB and Up/Down arrows to manually increase or decrease a stat the DEX and CON stats will allow you to keep pressing UP to increase the values, even when they top out at 18. The problem is that when you realized "oops! I pushed too many available points into DEX or CON, let me decrease the values to get the available points back" doesn't work.

Example.

Let's say I have...

Human Fighter True Neutral

DEX 10

Available Points: 10

I press the UP arrow 8 times which maxes my DEX out at 18. If I continue to press the UP arrow, my remaining 2 Available Points (of the initial 10) will also disappear like the stat is increasing still, except the DEX remains at 18.

So, I press the DOWN arrow to get those missing 2 Available Points back, but now my DEX is 16. If I return my DEX to it's initial value of 10, I should have 10 Available Points left as before, but the actual Available Points shows 8 and not 10. Those two extra points that were taken after the DEX was maxed out at 18, are gone for good.

This same issue happens with the CON stat.

Not sure if this has been reported before, but I figured I'd mention it.

Bugs of this kind have definitely been experienced (and reported) before. At least some of them had been fixed but it seems we have a reoccurrence. I expect Paul will require a mini-mod of you can do one.

I can do one, but it also happens in a fresh mod, so if Paul would like he can also try a new mod, and simply start it and create a character and test the manual stat functions.

You will find that the way things work is that bugs reported with a mini-mod are much more likely to be addressed, even if they are easy to describe and reproduce.

I have seen this bug myself.  Manikus and I are
quite aware of it.  I am waiting for this bug to
pop to the top of his queue.

I have heard of this bug, but I have no mini-mod.

For all engine bugs, please include a mini-mod.

OK, here is the mini-mod, but... to be honest, its just the templatedesign.dsn data with the main folder renamed to mini-mod.dsn. I just zipped it up.

To see this bug, I simply ran the dungeoncraft.exe in the templatedesign.dsn, then attempted to create a new character. By manually increasing the characters DEX or CON you will see the bug happening when the DEX or CON reaches 18 and yet you can still spend available points on those abilities, yet the value does not increase past 18. Making a custom design isn't required for this bug to happen. Let me know if you require any further info on the bug.

Thanks,
John

I tried your mini-mod.

It contained no "Playfile.log" to demonstrate the
problem.

I tried renaming "Record000.log" to "Playfile.log".
That failed because you made the recording with
version 2.13 whereas I was using version 2.24.
I tried it with version 2.13 and it ran OK but did
not appear to demonstrate the problem.  All it did
was 're-roll' the stats many times before saving
the character as "Draugr'.

You'll get quicker action if you provide a mini-mod
using a very recent engine version and with a "Playfile.log"
that demonstrates the problem.

In the event you do not know how to make a Playfile.log:

At the title screen type Control-R  ( to start recording)
Demonstrate the problem.
Exit the engine.
Find the latest Recordnnn.log and rename it to "Playfile.log"
Test your mini-mod by:
Start the engine
At the title screen type Control-P  (Start playback)
Watch the action to be sure it demonstrates your problem.

Ok, I'll try that. I did test the design before zipping it and I was able to produce the issue, I then hit ALT-F4 to exit. Perhaps I need to complete the character creation to get the record logs. Still, I figured since it happens as soon ass the game loads and I did nothing other than create a character, that the data files included in the mini-mod would be fine to demonstrate the issue.

Ok, here is a new mini-mod.dsn

Note: I hit the CNTRL-R button and a recordnnn.log file was created in the data folder. I renamed it playfile.log, but running the mod again hitting CNTRL-P did nothing. I'm not sure if the playfile works.

If you look closely, you will see that you named your playback file

"Playfile.log.log"

I changed it to

"Playfile.log"

And it demonstrates your problem quite nicely.

Thanks for all your efforts.  I'll see if I can fix that today.

"Playfile.log.log"

Damn it! I just rebuilt (OS wipe and re-install) my PC last Monday. I forgot to set show extensions so all I saw was playfile.log. Now I see the whole file. LOL

Glad you were able to see the issue. I'll test out the new file you posted today. :)

Thanks
