Dark Alliances - Expanded DC Version
« on: October 06, 2015, 01:53:34 PM »
For those of you not following the troubleshooting thread where I'm currently attempting to help sort out the issues involved in importing FRUA modules into DC, I have begun work on an expanded version of my FRUA module "AT1: Dark Alliances" within Dungeon Craft.  It is my hope that once the many bugs have been squashed and we can move our previous work into DC with minimal effort, I will be able to migrate the module and update it with a ton of new quests, an expanded story, and hopefully a finalized ending.

There's a lot of bugs to work out with the importing process and a lot of work to be done.  There's no guarantee that it will ever even reach a stage of completion.  For now, though, here's a screenshot of some work I did this afternoon showcasing what the finished module could be like...

Looks SO good, Ben!

Would a little bevelling on the borders work?

Thanks!

What do you mean by bevelling on the borders?

Either darkening the outer one or two pixels of the borders, or darkening some and lightening some (eg, lightening pixels on the top and left side of the borders and darkening pixels on the bottom and right side, to make the edges, where the borders and the screen background meet, look a little more "real" and three-dimensional. Similar to the dark and light "chiselled" patterns in the frame. Hope that makes sense. I could try some quick photoshopping on your screenshot if you're not sure what I mean.

It looks great, adding "3d edges" as Steve suggests would probably make it look perfect. In any case, I am impressed!

The frame was actually created by Nol Drek.  It's his version of the FRUA frame.

Maybe I'll see if he wants to do something with it first.

Where did you get the smallpic from, by the way?

The best thing about working with art in DC is that I can utilize my skills with Photoshop to do a lot of things I couldn't do easily with FRUA art back when I made the original module.  See the screenshot below for an example of how I'm using Photoshop to create some interesting images.

In addition, dealing with the text is easier too.  You can write up all your text in something like WordPad in Windows, adding all the line breaks and color changes you want, then just drop it into DC and test it.  I really wish FRUA was this easy to deal with.

Looks cool. I agree beveling the frame images would enhance the entire look.

I wrote Nol to see if he was interested in updating his frame.  I think since he created the frame, he should get the option to update how it looks.  Seems only fair to me.

Feel free to modify this frame any way you see fit.

There is already beveling around the small pic frame - lighter on the right and bottom edges, darker on the left and top edges - as if the light source is at the top right hand corner of the screen.

Some of the other frame pieces are used in more than one place, so deciding where to start and end the beveling is an issue.
