Title: Pic of the Day
Post by: Ben J on September 18, 2009, 11:44:26 AM
Since most of the pics I posted in my "Artwork for The Sect"-thread aren't even going to end up in that game, and to have some more activity here, I've decided that I will try and post at least one picture per day in this thread.

If you have nice pictures of your own, feel free to join in. :)

We'll start of with a zombie, because who doesn't love zombies? Below is the pic in two versions, the second is ready for import into UA (must be converted to pcx first, of course).

I'll try and post the sources if I can still remember them. This friendly zombie comes from here: http://www.epilogue.net/cgi/database/art/view.pl?id=5363

Very nice, and a good idea too. :)

I'd like to play, at least today (and hopefully on other days).

The source of this image is, um, me. :D You just need to convert it to PCX format.

Is that a dungeoncraft pic?

Great. Wish I could draw stuff like that, instead of stealing everything. :D

Well, ok, I can manipulate photos, but that won't take you far with UA...

Originally done for Dungeon Craft, yet. :) But, I think he translates well.

My images are all about the 3D software, and very little about my drawing skills. ;) Knowing what makes a good picture goes a long way.

|sf>I disagree completely.  If you're able to take photographs with film or a digital camera, one good photograph of a location can yield quite a number of cpics.  Granted, it won't generally help you create FRUA monsters, but it's a good source for location pictures or atmospheric pictures.  For Dungeon Craft, photographs also very handy for creating walls.  :)

You're right, of course. I was thinking more of portraits and icons.

You can see some of the photo manipulation I did in the title pics at the beginning of my artwork thread. There's even a self-portrait, painted green... :D

The pic I have for you today is another one from my series of city bigpics. This one is a large metropolis, with a cathedral on a hill, overlooking the town.

Can't remember the exact source, but  think it was also from epilogue.net.

Nice city. :) I like the lighting. The hill the cathedral is on has a definite pyramidal aspect.

Thank you!  :)

I like that pic, too.  The metropolis just too damn big to represent one of the cities in my game.

In his "Two Cities"-mod, Olivier used an ingenious way to make a town appear bigger: Travelling to different quarters by menu, 'skipping' over the other, presumably large, parts of Neatsville.
In such a case, this pic could be suitable.

Or you could use it as atmosphere to set the party in a large city where they are restricted to a small part of it for some reason - prisoners, or quarantine for example.

That city pic is fantastic, I think it would work well as an overland map, too.

That elf looks good. Do you have a pic of a temple priest / cleric done in this style?

Didn't even think of that. Yes, it could work, although you'd probably need some more discernible landmarks besides the cathedral.

The pic for today is a structure on the horizon that could either be a mountain, a tower, and anthill, or a giant pile of... whatever.

This one was actually in the game, unitl it got replaced by a pic that conveyed more clearly what that mountain was supposed to be.
Title: Re: Pic of the Day
Post by: manikus on September 20, 2009, 01:16:34 PM
Cool picture. It kind of reminds me of Devil's Tower and at the same time a graphic used in some of the desert combat wilderness sets. :)

I'm glad you liked the elf, Ben. Today's offering is a cleric/priest/hierophant. As with the others I've posted, I made this one too.
Title: Re: Pic of the Day
Post by: Ben J on September 20, 2009, 02:42:46 PM
The cleric looks great. Only thing is, he appears to be bare-chested, which would make him unfit to be my standard temple-priest replacement.

Right now, I'm using the VGA-ed version of the old EGA temple priest, found at corhub (image below). To replace that, the temple priest would have to look rather "neutral".

Do you have the same pic with some more "chaste" clothing? :D

Boy, you guys must keep your brightness turned up high.  Those pics look pretty dark on my monitor, even at night, and after it's been plenty warmed up.   :P
Title: Re: Pic of the Day
Post by: manikus on September 20, 2009, 11:09:25 PM
The Heirophants are all dark. :) Part of the character idea he was originally created for (he deals with werewolves and demons and other things that go bump in the night). Though the small versions are  darker than the original...it's not by too much.

I think much of my work is dark, not by theme but by lighting. Hmm, I'll have to think on this and try some stuff to see if I might like to change that.
Title: Re: Pic of the Day
Post by: Ben J on September 21, 2009, 05:48:21 AM
Thanks, manikus!  :)

Yeah, the hierophant pics are a bit dark, but they can be brightened up a little.

I like the red one. I'll see if he fits into the overall style of the game (although there's not much of a consistent style, since the pics come from all kinds of different sources).

Below is a brightened up version of the red guy. Still dark, but a little clearer.

Now I don't know about the symbol on his chest. If he's supposed to be the "standard" priest, not every temple would have the same symbol. Maybe I'll edit that out, if that's okay?  ;D

I think I'll jump in with a few. A few years ago, I had a hard time finding a portrait of a dwarf who wasn't yelling, swinging a weapon, or both. I wanted something in a more conversational setting, and I don't like starting a conversation with someone who is yelling or attacking. That sort of thing shouldn't happen until after we've talked a while.
In any case, here are some I came up with.
Title: Re: Pic of the Day

Very nice lookin' bunch of dwarves. I mean tough...I don't want them to start yelling at me and attack me. ;)

(I have a great fondness for taverns, particularly happy ones.)

Your mountain pic reminds of the old earthen towers around Salsbury plain, although they're not so tall. Maybe it's the weather at the top that makes me think of druids.

@nologgie:

I'd put the dwarf-tavern pic into my game for sure, if there only was a dwarf-tavern.

Since I was limited to the standard UA art when I originally created "The Sect", and the vanilla art didn't include much dwarf pics, the dwarves were sadly relegated to a very minor role in the game.
But then again, even the gnolls got their own village, despite there being only one gnoll pic. ;)

But this pic is so good that it makes me wonder if maybe I should introduce a dwarf tavern somewhere... ;)
If I only had a free bigpic slot...

glad you guys like the dragon. :) I was worried that it was a little dark...part of which is the black background, part is my lighting scheme.

If I ever do the mod that includes all of the fantasy creatures that I invented over the years (like Gramlocks, Smuskis, Huschkis, Ukoras, Kastenköpfe, Erbärmlinge, Zahnzwerge etc.), this program could come in handy for creating their pics.

@nologgie:

These are incredibly useful pics!

That merchant could also double as a temple priest / sage.

The thing about DAZ and Poser is that they can cost you a lot of money if you buy the company line. ;) But, if you start looking, there are literally thousands of freebies available for use.

Check out this thread (http://www.skybakcone.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2) to get you started with some human figures.

Nice graphics! :) The first two look as if they could go with Ben's palace pic. I also like the night watch. There are lots of pictures of soldiers, but few of a city watch theme.

Thanks for the links! I'm WAY too cheap to buy the company line of anything I can get for free. (Insert SOURCEFORGE ad here).

I used the Amiga Sculpt programs for years, and alway made my own figure sets. Sculpt was based on triangles, though, and was very easy to design with. All the PC engines I've checked out use slices, which are easier to modify, but much more time consuming to design. It looks neat so far, but I have to run it on my laptop because my old desktop doesn't meet the specs.

@Ben: That is a nice palace. As Olivier mentioned, if I ever do an Al-Qadim mod, I will use this. :)

@Olivier: The more the merrier!

@Nologgie: With all the freebies available, there is no reason you would need to spend any money on this. :) Plus, if you want to do some 3D modelling of your own to supplement what is already available, there are some pretty darn good tools available (need I mention that they are free?) :D

I thought that the

My pix for today are all big pics of towns, shamelessly stolen from varied sources, and tortured into FRUA configuration.
A walled town, suitable for an Al-Qadim setting, a tudoresque farming village, a generic small town (woodland setting), and an early iron age village.

Erbärmlinge are Ozonius' (my fantasy world's) equivalent of Kobolds. The ones everyone tramples underfoot. Their name translates roughly to "Measlings".
But they're still not the most puny creatures in the world, that honor belongs to the Krepels, the Erbärmlings' pitiful purple cousins (who even make a cameo appearance in "The Sect").

Below is a smallpic of an Erbärmling, which I tried to draw directly into an UA pic template, with predictably MSPaint-like results...

Good one, Ben, and thanks for the explanations!

Ring forts and walled villages were a standard design for centuries. It's a pity UA doesn't handle curves well.

Manikus, do you do multiple poses of the same character? Such as conversing (looking straight at you), combat (or other action), and dead/down?
I've played modules that showed a picture of a supposedly dead character still swinging a sword (same stock pic, regardless of situation). I understood the reason, but it played havoc with my suspension of disbelief.

It depends. :) If I am just releasing pics like this, I often only do two shots, one close up and one that shows the whole figure, though not necessarily in an action pose.
If I am doing the characters for my own design, I will render as many images as needed, as well as using the character to make an icon. :D I typically end up with 5 or 6 small pics and a combat icon.

Thanks, I find it disturbing myself!  :D
Yes, I deleted the tongue on the closeup, believing he was more interested in swallowing than tasting at that point.

I like the mondo-industrial cityscape. I've never tried a city like that in a mod, but I think if I did, I'd have to come up with a whole array of supporting art to fill it. (And never finish it, just like the others.)

In it's own way, the cityscape is just as creepy as the ghouls...especially when I start imagining ghouls creeping around the shadows of that city. :)

I don't have a creepy picture to offer today, though I suppose that is perspective, I guess my character could look creepy to the ghouls. :D

Here's what I could come up with today, although I'm not really satisfied.

The first was cropped from an awesome picture by Jon Hodgson, three strangers riding into a small town under the distrusting eyes of a resident. Unfortunately I had to scale it down a bit, so it's not as good as the original and the resident can hardly be made out but it's still quite nice compared to default art. ;)

The second is a thri-kreen and the the third could be a devil or efreeti.

So why is this a necromancer rather than a cleric casting healing spells, or making a golem?  Um... because when I found it, I needed a necromancer.

Here's another one for the necrophiles. This one didn't translate well to 256 colors (or less, I keep forgetting the number recommended by Vix...) and got pretty pixelated. Still looks good if viewed from far away though. ;)

I like that pic. In fact, I recently included that same Lich-King as a smallpic into "The Sect" (dammit, another spoiler!).

I think your version looks great... and so does mine. :D

@ Manikus - Good elf! IMHO you got the ears just right. (The elf-ear debate still rages: proponents exist for size ranges from Vulcan to Jack Rabbit, though not so much in this forum.)

@ Ben J. - Nice castle. While viewing it, I found myself caught up in visualizing how to map out the varied levels, and what would be there.

For my pix today, some views of Tunfaire: A city overview shot, a market pic, and day and night views of Macunado Street. I was hoping to come up with a grouping of more similar styles, but I haven't yet.

What an awesome bunch of pictures! :) The castle is very majestic looking, Ben. And I really like the fair pictures.

Here's todays offering and a couple of bonus images that I threw together as well. :)

Oh, the ears... :) I've unfortunately been in the middle of a couple of ear debates (which I tried to keep quiet), and all I have to say is that unless I'm getting paid, you won't ever see me add the matching eyebrows. ;)

Well, now we've had a highly appropriate response from the Deep Delver. I fear no witty retorts, for they but pass harmlessly above my thick, stoney skull. Sticks and Stones are quite another matter. And Stones with sticks? Suffice it to say, I'd never cross Charlie Watts.

That being said, Keith Richards is my favorite zombie. Not a "Time of the Season" Zombie, but rather a zombie for all seasons, a miracle of modern chemistry and eldritch energy. Plus, he can still hammer the 6th chords and keep a beat. Like the Energizer Bunny on... well, whatever he's on. If I'd thought of him during the Favorite Undead poll, I'd have voted for zombies.

To counter that, here's a lovely pic of a farmhouse that I took yesterday (so this one is completely created by me, for a change).

After doing UA pic conversions for a while, you automatically judge things you see by how well they could fit into an 88/88 or 304/122 pixel frame... :D

Post by: Ben J on September 28, 2009, 04:17:08 PM
Okay, I've downloaded Dead Gods and had a quick look at it. I must say that the title sequence, set to "Imagine", was really, really weird (but great).  :D

And I've seen the mid-pics, they're still square, but bigger, which is a great idea. I didn't even know that this was possible.
Title: Re: Pic of the Day

And I've seen the mid-pics, they're still square, but bigger, which is a great idea. I didn't even know that this was possible.

You just have to remember to put the picture frame back on after you use one. (Nol used picb1135 to do this.) Otherwise, you get a very ragged effect around the wall view.

Nol used a lot of innovations in Dead Gods, most of which I missed the first time I played it because I didn't know enough about UA to pick up on them at the time. Nol's mods have very distinctive looks. I'm anxious to see what he does with the Gamma World hack!

Another innovative mod I rarely hear mention of is Harri Polsa's Quest 3, in which he made good use if tiny pics. (And animation, color cycling, combat dungeons, etc.)

Title: Re: Pic of the Day

They don't have to be the same size as Nol used.  A pic's display size info is coded into each individual pic*.tlb.

Pretty wild, hunh?    ;D

Ben J. - How is the Art-Pak coming?

The doc will be finished tonight, I guess, and then I'll upload it. I don't know how long it'll take until it shows up on the site.

Those tiny pics, they're... really, really tiny, indeed. Why would anyone want to reduce the size of the smallpics even further? I guess the "small town" is the reason...  ;D
Another mod that I must download...

Here's my version of the castle in your first pic. This one actually shows up in my game, as the outside of a fortified town.

Irish and the Old West have much in common. Like the Irish.

I've always been intrigued by Tragin's self-portrait. Nothing too coherent from me today. Just 2 views of a seer, the service window where she sees me with other ne'er-do-wells, and a despondent McKenna Gnome pondering why his ilk are so unpopular in FRUA.

Superb pics, especially the bard!  :)

Searching for an UA  pic of a female bard (and not finding a suitable one) was what started off my whole art-creating for "The Sect". Had I seen this pic back then, it would have certainly found its way into the game!

The first one, of the hobbit thief, would also be perfect for a certain brand of characters in the game! I don't know if I can clear another pic slot, though. I curse that picture limit!

(But aren't they all really halflings? Not the new version of the race as in 3e and later, but the classic halfling is a less hungry version of a hobbit.)

That is one school of thought. Another theory is that a halfling is a cross between a hobbit and a 'possum. Some claim this theory is a base canard and entirely false. They also point out the value of prehensile tails when burgling above the ground floor.

That's Olive Ruskettle, the halfling, who made her Goldbox appearance in Curse of the Azure Bonds.  She had a part in my original story idea for an EGA mod, which I scraped because it was too epic.  Still, you'll find a couple of 16-color pics of her in the final mod's art gallery, from when I started some pre-lim art.

I wondered if there might be a connection, never having met many bards of her race and gender.
The description of halfling I mentioned earlier was developed in my persona for a dwarven fighter with a very dry sense of humor I ran in a p&p campaign. When a character was introduced as a halfling, he'd give his description and check them for a tail. I suspect he'd have wanted to check Olive for a tail even without the running joke, and would probably have fared the worse for it if he'd tried.

The windmill may not be medieval, but the dragon is certainly fantasy. Great pic!

There's something more modern than the windmill in it, if you look a little harder. That's what troubled me at first. But now that I know dragons are certainly fantasy, I'm quite relieved and wondering why I even bothered to pay them my tributes then...  ;)

Nice dragon. I've always liked the white dragons, mostly because of a story where a frost giant had one as a pet. :) I always liked that idea.

EGG was pretty clear that 1e halflings were hobbits. In 2e they became less so, and even less in 3e, where they started down the road to becoming half-sized humans. :(

As for the bard, she does look like a hobbit. :) I've seen this picture many times (it's in one of TSR's art books). I had just never though about what her race might be. :)

I've found a pic for the day, it's not by me, but from one of my favorite artists, Keith Parkinson. What dragon party would be complete without a dracolich? :D

Edited to add:
Arghhh! I somehow missed a whole page of responses! Thanks hans, now the mystery is solved. :)

The two demonic/diabloic pictures are nice. I think we could use a lot more pics of the denizens of the lower planes.

Thanks for the flying dracolich pic!

I like the camp pic too. We could use more camp pics to cover different areas and situations.

Here is an incognito devil from Clyde Caldwell. I tried to find one to match the spirit of the others.

Very nice images, gentlemen. :) I agree with needing more camp picture options, we could also use more images of rooms in innes and such as well.

I love Caldwell's art. He and Parkinson and Jeff Easley along with Fred Fields and Larry Elmore have really set for me what AD&D looks like.

That devil looks absolutely great, especially the closeup.

Here's a pic that I did recently, when I had the idea to do a mod in which you could meet all kinds of famous people and fictional characters (kinda like the South Park episode "Imagination Land").

Maybe I'll make that mod some time in the future. Or maybe I should start a thread in which we can collect all kinds of outlandish mod ideas...

Some cartoony mod ideas I've though about doing (inspired by Suzanne's Transformers and pokemon icons), but that never got off the ground were a Simpson's mod, a Scooby Doo mod and a Power Puff Girl mod. :)

I must admit, Cereal Mod and Powerpuff Girl Mod are pretty weird ideas.  :D
But they could be great nevertheless.

Here's my pic of the day: A large pile of treasure. If you look closely, you can see the claw of the dragon who's guarding the treasure, but somehow that dragon didn't work in "letterbox" format, so I cut it out.

"Walter" looks like a caricature of John Goodman. hehe

I briefly (like a day or two) worked on a cartoon mod based on Nintendo characters. Mostly i just researched art styles and attempted a few combat icons. I even had the general basis of the story worked out. Party members would include (at times) Mario, Luigi, Toad, Princess Toadstool, Yoshi, Link, Zelda, Simon Belmont, Donkey Kong, Megaman, Samus Aras, Kirby, and some pokemon. There were several twists, too.

A Nintendo design could be fun, especially if you get to drive a go kart at some point. ;)

I like the second gargoyle better than the first one, but they're both nice. :) That is some altar - the kind of place when you see it in the dungeon that you immediately draw your sword or pull out your wand. :D

@ Manikus, the ice wolf is certainly a sizable critter, as can be seen in the larger pic below.

@ Ben J, the ice troll was somebody's avatar on a forum I visited (I don't remember which one), which I promptly snatched, retouched, and trimmed to 88x88. It may very well have been from a D&D miniature.

That's strange... didn't you make it through the sewers? You should have seen at least its combat icon in the final battle. I'm not sure about the small pic, it might make a short appearance on that occasion or not. Anyway, you probably missed the opportunity to eavesdrop on the critters.

Now that you say it, you probably mean the scene behind the curtain. Could be that I saw the were-bat but can't remember it.  :)

Anyway, I got through most of the sewers alive just because I managed to avoid most of the fights. With only three players it was damn hard! And I forgot that you told me to look for other NPCs to join the party before I went down into the sewers, and the game itself gave no hint that there were available reinforcements around somewhere.

I guess that there's yet more stuff in the game that I didn't see. And I still have to attempt the attack on the mayor's office, the only one of the four endings I didn't try so far.

Wow, that's tough. Yeah, I know, the mod isn't exactly well-structured. That's what you get when you just follow the random voices in your head instead of planning ahead. I bet I never really thought about party size anyway. I just put the NPC's in for the fun of it, but of course they were always in my party when I tried to balance the combats.   ::)

I think it was interestingly structured, like a couple of completely different games packed into one. Like it's Pacman, but if you go round a corner, it suddenly becomes Super Mario.  :D
This adds to the replay value, of course. I think I'll play it two more times (picking up the NPCs and attacking the mayor's office).
But a hint within the game would be nice, so that the player can choose if he wants to get help before he descends into the sewers, or if he wants to try it on his own.

Source: Bulette by *BenWootten (http://benwootten.deviantart.com/art/Bulette-95268630)

Maybe better for a big pic but a big pic won't fit the bulette slot. The background might somewhat limit its usefulness, but I like it.

Great pic! Brings out the whole "land shark" aspect of the bulette a bit more!  :)

I don't know if it would fit the game, though, with the grass in the background. Bulettes are better known as "Wurbels" in my game, and they live in the desert. But they play a very minor role in the game anyway. I might keep the original pic (Vix VGA version, respectively), but I wanted to see what other pics exist. The UA gallery didn't have much.

nologgie, your pic shop01 has now become part of my game. Thanks again!  :) Where is it from?

I looked for the sources (probably something from WOTC) in hopes of getting higher resolution pix to work from, but didn't find them. Here is the one I was working from.

I'm off to a gig, but I'll look for bullettes when I get back.

p.s. I googled and found it at:
http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/dmg2_gallery/90057.jpg (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/dmg2_gallery/90057.jpg)

Referring page is: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ag/20050610a&page=2 (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ag/20050610a&page=2)
A PDF of DMG2 might provide a better pic.

Thanks very much, nologgie!  :)

I've been looking all over the galleries at wizards.com to find a pic like this, but apparently I didn't look into the Dungeon Masters Guide.

There was also the cool minotaur from Judge Deadd's art pack:

It seems there is a much smaller selection of bullettes than I expected, but here are two views of one.

Yes, I also couldn't find many pics.

But I like your bulette, especially the first one!

I acquired a PDF, but the pic in it actually looks much worse (see below).

I did a second attempt at the shop pic. The colors are a bit more lush, but the general quality is the same, except fot the face, which looked horrible in my version, so I cut-and-pasted the face from your pic into mine and adjusted the colors.  ;)

Good job!  :D

I washed out much of the pic while trying to get the face to look like a face. I thought about making a composite cut-and-paste, and will probably try it on both shop pictures to see if I can come with something that looks really clear. I need the practice, and they'll be easier than what I want to do for my current (heh!) mod.

Maybe you can come up with something. I already like the pic the way it is, but if it becomes even clearer, I'd like it even more.

Two views of a blacksmith. His services weren't needed in my game, but maybe he can make himself useful in another:

Nice blacksmiths, guys. They all look good, but the perspective makes the dwarf seem bigger than the other fellow.
It would be cool to see a blacksmith in his workplace, kind of like the above shopkeeps, but that is not of the smith working on the Dragonlance. ;)

It's good to see a post from Vix, and I, too, like the third pic best.

Ben, that is the best (and probably only) pic of an orc smith I've ever seen!  :D

Today I have a picture of a Smith's workshop, however it's Rupert Ignacious Smith, and he's a mage. And a close-up of one of his tomes.

Could be. Rupert knows a bit about potions. If you could see the book well enough to read it, you'd find the recipe for making old-school owlbears. Much like the one below.

And since anyone can post, if you needed a pic of an attacking werewolf in a dark area, you could just post one! (Or you could use this one.) Sort of a flexible form of rigidity.

Or we could collect a certain number of pics that every contestant must use for his (mini-)mod.

It could be interesting to see how the pics are put to use, but this could also become boring, seeing the same pictures over and over again.  ;)

And I like that wolf. Kind of reminds me of the "Dread Wolf" in Death Knights of Krynn.

That's not mediocre at all. It looks great!  :)

There are two reasons I can't use it in my game, though: The first is the modern clothing, and the second is I don't use any photographs, so this pic would stick out too much.

But this bowyer would totally fit in Nol's Gamma World mod.

I think I'll use something like this:

Herculoids - now that's something I haven't seen in like 25 years or so. YouTube, here I come. :)

I'm surprised Herculoids was still on the air 25 years ago. Elastic ectoplasmic intelligent blobs, a biceratops who could shoot fire through a hollow horn, and the rest may have been a bit beyond far-fetched, but I enjoyed it at the time. At least they didn't try to be The Archies and form a band, like too many others of that era.

Anyway, I'm back at the house, and it's Halloween here, so it must be time to post some pix.

p.s. Ben J - I was surprised to see you post that pic of my house!  ;)

Yeah? You'll be even more surprised to find out that I'm standing in front of it with a pickaxe right now!!!  >:( :o *cue in scary music* ;D

I have two more pics to add to this day.

Halloween used to be virtually unknown in Germany (except as the backdrop for Michael Myers movies), until sometime this decade, when TV stations and companies started a massive push for it. Now it's becoming more and more of a special day here also.
And it's logical. On a more traditional day like "Sanktmartinstag", you can sell only sweets, but on halloween, you can sell sweets, costumes, decorations, severed body parts...  ;D

Scary images, gentlemen, especially Grandpa Munster, Ben. He's always creeped me out - in the same way I find clowns disturbing, and a bit in the way I find all lascivious old men creepy.

I like the death picture, nologgie. :) I could picture that one in a horror/Ravenloft mod...(actually I could picture all of this latest batch as such)...as a main baddy or maybe as a narrator. ;D

low-res conversions for FRUA use would be more than welcome, for those of us who get tired of cutting/pasting/translating various file types.  Also, I've noticed not all of our community is gathering on these forums, so some folks are truly missing out were it not for the hosted UA File Archive.

Yip, this guy isn't in the game anymore. The art for "The Sect" is in constant flux (a few posts above this, I've posted the evolution of a character that ended up being thrown out as well). But I think I've settled for the final versions of all the small pics now. Two more big pics need some work, and I'm still messing around with the sprites, mainly figuring out how I can use yet more of them through double- or triple occupancy of big sprites...

low-res conversions for FRUA use would be more than welcome, for those of us who get tired of cutting/pasting/translating various file types.  Also, I've noticed not all of our community is gathering on these forums, so some folks are truly missing out were it not for the hosted UA File Archive.

I think I will be packing up a lot of the stuff posted here and in the "art requests" section (gnolls, minotaurs etc.) into zips and uploading them to the UA file archive, but not before I'm done with my design.

Another skeleton. You can never have enough skeletons in fantasy games..

I converted this from an online ad I found on the home page of the "Angry Video Game Nerd".

It's on green screen, so you can combine it with all kinds of backgrounds; it would also work as a sprite.

It won't be too long until the release of "The Sect" (or so I hope). I'm also eagerly waiting to play "Deepdelvers", so we both better hurry. :D

There will be some parodies and random lines from movies and references to pop culture in the game, but most of them pretty subtle, except for two cameos by rather famous people.

The references range from the well-known (e.g. Star Wars) to the outer limits of the obscure (there is a reference to a German Atari freeware game that generates one (!) hit on google - I suppose it doesn't get any more obscure than that).

If I had to cast my main villain for a movie version of "The Sect", this guy would play him (after being subjected to a "Resurrection"-spell, of course):

Klaus Kinski is a terrific actor.
<edit: I should've said "was" as he's been gone for around 20 years, now.>

I was thinking about a spaghetti western, The Great Silence, just the other day, in fact.  In it, Klaus plays the bad guy.  The big twist for this spaghetti western is (SPOILER) that the good guy loses the climatic fight to the bad guy.  No moral victory, no sort of victory at all to soothe the spirits of the shocked viewers.  Very dark, indeed.

I was wondering how well that sort of super-bleak ending would go over in the superhero genre.  I don't remember it ever being done to that extent...

Klaus Kinski is a terrific actor.

Terrific-good or terrific-bad? For certain roles, he was excellent. I see I either have to dive into FRUA or to hope for a DC version to see if the main villain of "the sect" really is a Kinski-character...

Terrific-good or terrific-bad?

Maybe, terrific at acting like a bad guy?   :P

I wouldn't say that I'm a fan.  He did a good number of high-scale artsy films (like those for Werner Herzog, of course), which I seldom ever see, but he also did a ton of b-movies, which somehow I usually do wind up seeing.  Surrounded by sub-par actors, he had little trouble standing out in those, but he's difficult not to watch in whatever he was in.  His style was intense and offbeat, and he did crazy real good.   :o

"Aguirre, the Wrath of God" is one of my favorite movies. I imagine my main villain in the final act of "The Sect" kinda acting like Kinski in that film. At least sharing the same delusions.

The identity of the main villain will not be revealed until the finale of the game, but the Law of Economy of Characters (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050306/GLOSSARY/50309011/1005) could probably help deducing who it is.

Heh, I have that film on DVD. A singularly mean-spirited ending indeed.  :D

Low income halflings and gnomes always get the shaft don't they? In bars around these parts halflings who are well into their 40s are denied entrance to the drinking establishments because the bartender just thinks they're kids, and the gnomes - well the gnomes aren't allowed in that bars at all, no matter what.

Are these images from the Plane Scape boxed set? I have it somewhere. I got the following from my Paizo pdf of Planes of Law:

They were originally at 80%, or 135 x 135, before I put them at 100% at 180 x 180 then 50% at 90 x 90. They were on the back of the Mechanus map and three of them were on the map crease where you can tell from the line or the missing section. Anyone feel like colorizing them? I don't think I can get between the lines.

Yes, they can be found in the Planescape Boxed Set on the back of one of the poster maps.

Many of them can also be found in the Great Modron March adventure.

Here are 3 more images:

1) Title Pic of the Great Ring
2) Small Pic of an Ultroloth
3) Small Pic of an Arcanoloth

Like the Modrons on the previous page of this thread, these have been reduced in size and decreased in color depth, but have not been run through UA256 yet to optimize the palette.

That 4th edition art sometimes comes from the 3rd edition. Only three products were in the clear for full images. The rest are just 123 x 97 thumbnails. Most of them aren't usable. I tried.
