Sorry, but I am a little reluctant concerning drawing "official" comic characters. Maybe I can help with other things (modern walls etc.)?
(I have not forgotten about the cave walls I offered to do, by the way...)
-
Same here.
In the States, I believe the law is (or was) that anything within 20% (?) of a copyrighted character likeness, is infringement. I do recall a couple guys in Florida were doing airbrushed Aliens T-shirts, and Fox tore them apart in court. Anything that looks like Ironman could certainly garner a cease & desists order.
**Yes, I've seen the FRUA modules.

I need some help with icons for Hero Craft! Listed below are the NPCs that will come premade, and it would sure be nice to use them in combats. ;)
I'll be able to create some icons and smallPics once I'm done with the Golden Age Heroes Icon Set.
-
While this thread is specifically for icons that I need, all art is welcome.
I currently have a frame set and cursor. I have one wall set (with matching backgrounds).
I have smallpics for all of the listed characters. I think I am only go to put one of each in the pack that I upload, but then link to my site - and other sites/threads that have images. Or do you guys think that we should put more than one of each?
I have no sprites and no big pics.
As far as copyright issues...
I do not have the copyright on any of these characters, nor did I specifically ask permission to sue the likenesses from the copyright holders.
This is fan art. We will not make money on it, nor is it intended to compete with any games/comics/products that the copyright holders currently have in production or plan to put in production.
If they ask me to take down the icons/smallpics, I will. :)
This is fairly standard now. :) I have had my Hero Craft images online for years and years. The artists on deviantArt and various 3D websites put up new images all the time, in fact several people are making a (meager) living selling 3D superhero products that they do not hold the copyright to, calling it "cosplay" and so far have not received a cease and desist order. But our community is not making any money on this, and I think we are fine.
However, I think that every artist/creator should do what they feel comfortable doing, and do not intend the above as any kind of peer pressure, etc. just as an explanation of what I am doing.
-
I already have icons for a few of the heroes on your list. They are not consistent in style and most lack shadows. Feel free to add shadows, tweak them, or to use them as placeholders until better icons become available.
-
Awesome additions, ol. :D Thank you.
-
When you say, "Captain Marvel," I think, "Carol Danvers." If you meant, "Mar-Vell," then we will need another icon.
-
When you say, "Captain Marvel," I think, "Carol Danvers." If you meant, "Mar-Vell," then we will need another icon.
I totally meant Carol Danvers. :D I had to pick one of her identities, so picked most recent, but I should have put her name in parens. For Giant-man, I mean Hank Pym, and for Green Goblin, I mean Norman Osborne.
-
I have done a few icons recently. I am concentrating on villains right now. :D
-
These look very good, Manikus. I only somehow expected the Juggernaut to use his head for the attack... ;)
-
That should be Rhino. ;)
[IRRC, Juggernaut is sensitive about his head.]
-
[IRRC, Juggernaut is sensitive about his head.]
I am really no expert, but I remembered a cartoon I saw as a child in which he attacked head-first. I understand though that damaging his helmet may not be good for him...
-
[AFAIK] Nothing ~at all~ hurts him, but if you manage to remove his magic helmet, he becomes mortal.
Since I posted, I guess I should produce an Icon.
It's untested, but I believe it's in the correct format.
(If not, I'll be glad to fix it.)
*I just noticed that Rhino is not on the list. :(
Edit: This is a found game sprite that I tweaked with a shadow. In hindsight (examining it) the attack pose is not a powerful hit action... as it should be.
I may be able to draw a better icon myself. It's been awhile since I did comic art; but it might be a neat challenge.
I'll see how it goes.
**But indeed, someone please mention it if the formating is incorrect.
-
Nice icon, Mechanaut.
This last batch I did was all based on game sprites.
I won't use Rhino in the default release of Hero Craft. However, I plan on doing add-ons and that is largely because I have a bunch of icons in the works (again, based on game sprites) for characters not on my list. I just had to draw a line somewhere and I chose 100, because, well, that is a pretty large number. ;) I am also doing an add-on at some point for Gotham City, for which I am doing a number of original icons.
Concerning Juggernaut, he gets his power from a magic jewel. depending on the writer, he is often physically invulnerable, however, he is highly susceptible to mental attacks, and oh, did I mention his half-brother is Charles Xavier? His helmet functions exactly like Magneto's helmet.
Dinonykos, I recall the cartoon, and I know in the Marvel Superheroes fighting game, he has a head down charge. In the comics, a favorite trick of the X-Men is to get him to do some type of batteriing ram thing and break his helmet so they can mind control him. :) Now we are all kind of experts on Juggernaut.
-
Thank you, Manikus!
I think the cartoon I saw was an X-Men-Spiderman-and-his-amazing-friends crossover and indeed, I remember it was exactly that plot - Spiderman took Juggernaut's helmet of and then Prof X could influence him.
Concerning Rhino, I think the icon looks good.
-
I think Juggy appeared a couple of times in the X-Men cartoon. Not sure about which epsidoe it might have been. In fact, I didn't even know there was a cross-over - thought that X-Men and Spider-Man and Friends were made by competing companies who wuoldn't let anyone else use their characters. But then I am thinking only of the cartoons in the 90s.
-
Hmm. I thought for a moment I might be much older than you, but I guess the point is that old cartoons from the 70s and 80s were shown here during the early 90s... :D
:) I found it: "Spiderman and his amazing friends: A Fire-Star Is Born" from 1982.
The Spiderman cartoon from the 90s also had a crossover with the X-Men, the episodes are named "Mutant Agenda" and "Mutants' Revenge". But Juggernaut did not appear therein...
-
Cool. :D
I have seen lots of those cartoons. As an adult, I have gone back to try and watch some of them, and wow, talk about ruining my poersonal nostalic memories. ;)
I will postulate that the best incarnation of Spider-Man from say 1995 and earlier was Spider-Man on the Electric Company.
-
Nice icon, Mechanaut.
Thanks, Manikus
I won't use Rhino in the default release of Hero Craft.
Then here is Venom. ;)
-
Cool icon. :) Thanks. I will update the list. :D
-
Adding a couple more icons...
I think it could be a really interesting battle between these two: Huntress and M.O.D.O.K.
-
I had not imagined MODOK to be that big, but in any case, both icons are very good.
-
I know, right? But all of the sources I could find said that MODOK was 12' tall.
-
It may be a stylistic thing that he appears smaller here and there... ;)
-
I think you are correct about this. I like all of the icons we have, but there are definitely different looks going on, not to mention different posing tastes within the same art style. I hope that we end up with enough that people feel that they can do a game with what is there. :D
-
I deided on the weekend that one DC hero and one DC villain needed replacing: Vixen is out and Katana is in on the hero side, and Vandal Savage is out and Deadshot is on the villain side.
Now that Paul has awesomely made skill adjustments importable as part of the NPCs, I have gone from whatever over half-way done number I had given to 0 complete. "Oh no!" you say? No worries, before I reset to zero, I had actually finished all of them, so I have 100 NPCs who just need skills added. Also, I am going to extend my offer a bit - if someone wants to provide me an icon for a "major" DC or Marvel character not on the list, I'll add them. To wit, I am going to add The Rhino per Mechanaut's great Rhino icon. :)
If you have obscure DC or Marvel, other publishers, or original characters; I will still add them if you 1) provide an icon, and 2) a Mutants & Masterminds 3e character write-up (or are willing to convert using my notes), I will add them as well. If you are submitting an original character, it would be nice if you wanted to send me a smallpic of them as well :)
-
Here is a set of Hero Craft Icons:
Giant-Man
Rogue
Storm
Thor
Vision
-
These are great, Nol :) The Avengers and X-Men are now quite well represented. ;)
-
DC's hawkgirl
-
The poses are great, but it looks like a 16-colour image to me... I guess with some additional shading, the icon would also fit better with the other great icons you and Nol did.
-
Hawkgirl is a reworked/resized game sprite. This and several others I have posted need to be "improved". I an do that now, but that kind of stuff - which I find totally satisying - breaks me when it comes to doing databases/scripting. I can get deep into one at a time. ;)
Related to an earlier post - I listed the archtype packages that a PC can pick from (as well as creating her own character completely from scratch), but I didn't list the classes...
PC classes:
Adventurer, Champion, Guardian, Investigator, Mystic
NPC classes:
Agent, Assassin, Burglar, Criminal Mastermind, Criminal, Cultist, Journalist,
Lackey, Mercenary, Ninja, Police Detective, Police, Private Eye, Scientist, Soldier,
Special Forces, Spy, Super Villain, Technician, Thief, Thug, Vigilante, Villain
-
Hawkgirl looks great. Like you, I am building most of these icons from game sprites. Right now, my focus is on filling empty icon slots. We can worry about having a consistent style to the artwork later.
-

I certainly agree. I guess my icons (I will surely make a few) for Super Hero PCs will also have a slightly different style.
-
Any you do will be greatly appreciated.
I also discovered this weekend that I am going to need lots of spell art...
I do have plans to go back and touch up some of the icons I am doing. I am using a lot of game sprites, converting them to DC. There are great "recent" marvel game sprites, not so much for DC, though there are lots of older sprites.
-
Marvel Heroes:
Black Panther
Iceman
DC Heroes:
Cyborg
Flash
Hawkman
-
Wow, Nol. Great work. :D
These icons are all fantastic. And you have now finished off the Marvel heroes. That is a big milestone. 8)
-
I have a series of marten icons which I could easily modify into human, the results looking like the examples below. Would that be okay for self-made heroes?
-
Nice icons. :)
However you imagine superheroes is how your icons should look. ;) My first thought was that they should maybe be taller to match with icons that Nol Drek and I have made, but then I thought about it some more and think that we should indeed include icons of different sizes (I mean the figure size, not the image size).
-
I like the special effects for those icons. Icon49 looks like a Super Speedster. You could definitely use these for create-your-own heroes. Super Heroes tend to come in all shapes and sizes.
-
I also thought about the size issue. Some of my other characters are taller - I think there are around a dozen which can be used for super heroes. I will also do some characters from scratch.
-
Some more modified martens/helmettigers...
The female Ninja is based on the female Monk I posted elsewhere. Some icons are probably rather useful as villains... :)
-
Sweet! :D I really like the big one.
These are great. Nol's comment about the effects reminded me that I forgot to mention that I liked that, too. In fact, I am working on Black Canary and Zatanna icons that will have effects because I like what you id with them. ;)
So, here is what I am thinking about doing...
All of these icons andd any ones still yet to be posted that are not for NPCs will go into a pool. From that pool I will choose some (don't know how many that means yet) to be in the PC icon pool available at character creation and the rest will be included for use as the designer sees fit. Also, if there is one that is included that I don't put in the PC icon pool, the player will be able to change to other icons in the Resources folder.
-
Two DC villains. Doomsday an Black Adam.
-
I did not know Black Adam until now. Interesting...
One thing that jumped to my mind some minutes ago is that I should also do portraits for the characters you chose. If it is alright with Uatu, I could perhaps do it based on some of his portraits...
-
Portraits would be awesome! :D :D :D
DC/Warner has a Black Adam movie in the works, starring Dwayne "The Rock" ohnson as Black Adam. This movie is set to come out after Black Adam appears as a villain in the Shazam movie.
-
Nice icons, Manikus.
You can read the full story of Black Adam's first (and only) golden age appearance here:

-
Nice icons, Manikus.
Indeed. Is Black Adam made from scratch?
You can read the full story of Black Adam's first (and only) golden age appearance here:
http://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=15794
Hm... This is a great example of face stereo types in comics, particular of that age... :D (e.g., thick chin vs. thin chin, pointy ears vs round ears...)
I have also found and modified two icons which could be useful for cyborg characters. By the way, Manikus, feel free to modify these icons I post in context with the Super Hero Edition if it makes sense.
-
Rhe Black Adam icon is based on the Shazam icon higher in the thread. ;)
I recognize those icon bases that you have made into cyborgs. More cyborgs is always good. :D
-
This is my favorite DC comics minor character. Though, I really disloke the classic costume.
I am currently working on Katana - had no idea she had so many ifferent costumes...
-
Manikus -
You beat me to the punch with your Zatanna icon!
DC Heroes:
Martian Manhunter
Plastic Man
Wonder Girl
Zatanna
-
Can we really have too many icons of Zatanna? She is one that I ddidd because plan on using at some point, though i will be using the New 52 outfit (as I will do for multiple other ones).
Speaking of icons that i am going to do New 52 icons for in addition to the "classic" outfits - here is Black Canary
I have two in-progress icons which I will work on this weekendd - Katana and Poison Ivy. Then I will turn to the DC Villains entirely until they are done.
-
Nice icons from both of you. I will see that I do some new icons during the next week.
-
Thanks. :)
I was stuck in icon hell working on Solomon Grundy's shoes...
But, I ddid get Katana and Poison Ivy ddone. :)
-
Nice work, Manikus! Another DC character (I mean Katana) I was not aware of yet.
-
Katana is what you might call a "jobber. She's been a part of many teams in the DC universe. I like her best when she in the Birds of Prey. :D
-
Here come the Marvel Villains.
Abomination
Apocalypse
Bullseye
Doctor Doom (updated)
Doctor Octopus
Dormammu
Enchantress
Green Goblin
-
Sometimes, Apocalypse appears to be more than 7 feet tall.
-
Nice work, Nol ?D I especially like that Doctor Octopus icon.
here are several variable-height characters, and at some point you just have to pick a height and go with it. :)
-
I also like the Dr Octopus icon, but I wonder if the relatively big empty space in the standing pose might be confusing a little. Probably not really a problem...
Sorry by the way for not adding character portraits yet - I have to admit that this is quite challenging for me, even if I take art from Uatu as a basis.
-
I had thought about that issue with the icon..the same applies to the hawkgirl icon - there is nearly a full icons space beneath her. I had thought about doing a Mr. Fantastic/Plastic Man icon that ready frame was a "normal" dude and the attack pose was all stretched out not dissimilar to the Doc Ock icon.
I am going to start a new thread for Hero Craft portraits. :) Instead of doing icons this last weekend, I did some recolors of Uatu smallpics (I find it very entertaining to do these).
-
I considered adding some kind of "force field" around Doc Ock to make the ready pose wider. I also considered making the tentacles more spread out in the ready pose.
-
I also considered making the tentacles more spread out in the ready pose.
I guess that would be great.
-
I suspect we really only need worry about this issue if it is becimes a concern with one or more players, or if one of us "artsy" types becoms a bit (more) obsesssive compulsive. ;)
-
I also considered making the tentacles more spread out in the ready pose.
I guess that would be great.
Doc Ock v 2.0
-
Very nice!
-
Nicely done, Nol. :)
-
Here come the rest of the Marvel Villains:
Kingpin
The Leader
Loki
Madame Hydra (Viper)
Magneto
Mandarin
Morgan Le Fay (note spelling)
Mystique
-
Thanks for the comic book version of Mystique.
All of those are nicely done; most recognizable on sight, and the rest easily match the names, once you know them.
-
Nice set of icons, Nol. :D
-
DC's Penguin
-
Wow, that one is really beautiful.
For some reason one of my first thoughts was "blue leprechaun". :)
-
thanks. :) It'ss the hat. When I was drawing it, I kept thinking this looks like a leprechaunss\'s hat, but every change I made just made it more like the kind of hat a leprechaun would wear.. And before I added a few poundss to the body, that looked more like a leprechaun. I think the tux coat with tails is the other main factor. But, as someone has actually made a leprechaun icon, Penguiin is taller and fatter..
-
SSpeaking of leprechauns...this one has the color of one...from DC, The Riddler.
-
... and a hat, too! Very nice!
-
Hats and masks are all teh rage in the superhero icon community. ;) I just wish that all the icons were bigger so that I could do some proper hats. :D In addition to the ones that I have done, Uau has examples of wizard hats and you have certainly done ome helmets. ;) I think a sports ball cap would be easy enough, also sombreros. But the resst...hard to tell what they are at this low resolution.
-
Your Oswald Cobblepot and Edward Nigma icons look great, Manikus.
If you want to make more detailed hats, you could make all the icons double-sized. (Not a serious suggestion, as that would mean redoing everything else).
-
Are these drawn double sized and reduced, or drawn full size?
-
I actually have about a half dozen or so double-sized icons from this run sitting around on my hd. I will upload all of them when we have all the NPCs. :)
If I am using a game sprite to start with, I work at double-size and then reduce (and retouch) for the NPC icons. If I am starting with an Uatu icon, like I did for Penguinn and riddler, I start at normal size and there is no double size version. I am conidering when this is done making double-sized icons of the ones that don't have the larger size already.
I have another dc villain to offer today - Harley Quinn. I went with the classic look, but as with many of the other Gotham-related DC icons, I plan on doing an updated look as well (updated = New52).
-
DC Villains:
Bizarro
Black Adam
Brainiac
Captain Cold
Cheetah
-
Great icons, Nol! :DVery nice 89s/90s hair for Cheetah.
I'm adding to the DC villainy with Ra's al ghul and Killer Croc. I think I may need to do an update on KC, not that I look at his head, he kind of looks like a giant mutant Ninja Turtle without his shell. ;)
-
Okay, here are are 2 more DC icons - Black Manta and Kid Flash.
-
DC villain Deadshot
-
Two DC villainss to offer today. I didn't change a pixel of either one of these (just added sshadows and put in the DC format).
I may at ssome point change my mind about the Bane icon...but here are Gorilla Grodd and Bane.
-
Nice icons, Manikus! At this rate, we will soon have the DC villains completed.
-
Thanks. :D
Well, this guy should help - DC villain Deathstroke.
-
TOday I offer up Monday's child. Solomon Grundy. And perhapss one of the few heroes in the (DC) multiverse who i strong enough to fight him, Power Girl. Both are from DC.
-
Somehow, I got three icons done since yesterday...yay me!
Two DC villains and one DC hero:
Lex Luthhor
Heat Wave
Raven
We just have two to go! DC villain Giganta, and Marvel villain Annihilus.
-
The next 5 DC villains have been done already, but it can't hurt to have two icons to choose from.
Gorilla Grodd
Harley Quinn
Killer Croc
Lex Luthor
Poison Ivy
-
Very nice. :D
What I have decided to do with duplicate icons is...
the second one that gets posted gets a "2" at the end of the name and put in the Resources folder. ;) The NPC will by default load the one without the "2", but the designer will be able to easily change this.
-
If anyone wants to tackle them, I still need icons for Giganta and Annihilus.
