I think that Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" was one of the best films of the last ten years, but I was a little disappointed by "Be Kind Rewind"... so I guess I'll watch "The Green Hornet" when it comes out on DVD and rather wait until "True Grit" and "Black Swan" hit cinemas here and spend my money for that. Screw 3D.

I can totally relate to that, I think Gondry is a good director with great visual ideas but he's not the best of script writers. Teaming up with Charlie Kaufman was an excellent idea; the scripts that Gondry wrote alll by himself though ("Science of Sleep" and "Be Kind Rewind...") could have been a lot better. And "Be Kind Rewind..." sadly didn't even score in the visuals / original ideas department. Not that it's necessarily a bad movie but knowing what Gondry did before that, it was a let-down for me, too. That's why I was a little suspicious about "The Green Hornet" because the trailer made it look even more nondescript and directed at mainstream cinema audiences than "Be Kind Review...".

On the other hand, if it's mainly the visuals and the action that make it fun, all that will probably get lost on a TV screen...  :-\

I'm wondering if there is a contractual obligation for original and idiosyncratic directors to take on Superhero flicks or franchise pictures in between their more personal projects in recent years. Darren Aronofsky is planning to make "Wolverine 2" next. Not even a sequel to a good movie. No, "Wolverine 2".

I'd happily sell my artistic integrity for a fat paycheck.   :director2:
Alas, I can't even give it away.   :sad3:

More superhero stuff:

The villains of the next Batman film will be Catwoman and Bane, apparently.

Catwoman has been done three times in the movies already: As a comedic role in the sixties (Lee Meriwether), the hitherto best interpretation by Michelle Pfeiffer in the nineties (if you ignore the weird supernatural cat-resurrection stuff), and as a catastrophic failure by Halle Berry in the 2004 "Catwoman" movie.

So why Catwoman again? I'm still hoping that Talia Al'Ghul will be the other female lead.

Bane is an interesting choice. His character was completely screwed over in "Batman & Robin" (still my worst cinema experience ever), so there's definetly enough room to improve.

Still, Bane looks like a masked wrestler. I don't know how Nolan will get a good performance out of an actor wearing this outfit without people thinking: "Bring out the Gimp".

I wouldn't hazard an assumption one way or the other.

While I think Nolan's (and, of course, Heath Ledger's) interpretation of the Joker rates as the best supervillain performance ever, his Ra's Al Ghul and Two-Face were kinda lackluster...   :confused4:

I thought the portrayal of Two-Face was pretty good (miles above the Tommy Lee Jones version), but he wasn't in the movie for long enough. I was hoping that Harvey Dent would stick around for the sequel.

On the other hand, Nolan's Bat-Movies feel like actual self-contained movies because of this, not the kind of half-movies we get from other franchises (think Matrix or Pirates of the Carribean).

I think Two-Face really needs a gang in order to work -- men with machine guns, a gun moll, the whole underworld shtick -- and not just for window dressing (as in Batman Forever), but to provide depth & gravity to the threat he must represent.  He's the original Scarface of the Batman universe -- the Al Pacino or Robert DeNiro.  He is the decay of society, the cost of crime, an unpredictable explosion of violence.

I think Nolan's other second-fiddle villain, the Scarecrow, was handled much better.  In fact, IMO, the Scarecrow easily upstaged Ra's Al Ghul in the first movie.

I agree with that. The "wanna see my mask?" scene is really great.

Continuing our superhero obsession:

Now that a British guy has been cast as Superman, the three most popular American superheroes Batman, Spiderman and Superman are firmly under British control.

Time to take revenge and cast an American in the role of James Bond, perhaps?

I have my suspicions about the director of the Thor movie, too...   :director2:

Even if Dr Blake is US American, Thor (if anything) should be Scandinavian... :)
