Okay, I think you've all convinced me not to watch the D&D movie.  :D

Incredible that there was even a sequel to it.

The sequel, Wrath of the Dragon God, is not as bad as the first movie. There are recognizable classes and a dungeon crawl sequence.

Does watching the sequel make sense, if I just skip the first movie?

Not necessarily, a lot of people enjoy bad movies. :)

Speaking of bad movies, James Rolfe is currently reviewing one bad horror film each day in his annual Monster Madness series.
I have a feeling that I would enjoy those films a lot more than watching insufferable "serious" Hollywood crap like The Reader or Crash (the Haggis one, not the Cronenberg one).
But I'm not actively seeking out bad movies. Not as long as there are still Kurosawa films I haven't seen.

On the subject of monsters, and since we're into October (Halloween month), here's five of my favorite Horror movie themes:

I've never seen this last movie (or House by the Cemetery), but I heard the song on the Dr. Demento radio show, years ago, and found it funny and cool.

Some superhero news: Zack Snyder will be directing a new Superman movie, and Christopher Nolan is writing it.
I think this sounds quite promising.

Co-writing it. But his brother Jonathan Nolan who wrote the story of Memento seems to be involved, too. As long as Zak Snyder works with proficient and distinctive writers I can actually imagine enjoying his films. After all, I have no quarrel with his talent regarding visual aesthetics - if it is put to good use.  :P

Thanks for the info, Ben J!  :)

That is interesting.  Snyder's sense of visuals and tempo have almost tempted me to see his current, owl movie...

we're all adults here look past the fact that they're owls. i looked past the fact that there were giant blue cat people in avatar. :)  I hate cartoonish races/species. IMO: The Guardians film has a good fantasy plot and characters, from a literary standpoint.

If I had only watched 300, I'd be skeptical, but having also watched Watchmen*, I'm quite enthusiastic about the choice of Zack Snyder as director.

Snyder has also been tapped to helm the next Superman movie. This one will be made pretty quick before WB loses the license.

I was under the impression that DC Comics was owned by Warner Brothers.

They do, but this is what I am referring to:

"A July 9, 2009, verdict on the case denied a claim by Siegel's family that it was owed licensing fees. U.S. District Court judge Stephen G. Larson said Warner Bros. and DC Comics have fulfilled their obligations to the Siegels under a profit-sharing agreement for the 2006 movie Superman Returns and the CW series Smallville. However, the court also ruled that if Warner Bros. does not start a new Superman film by 2011, the family will have the right to sue to recover damages"

Yeah, I realized after I posted that you must be referring to the Siegel estate.

This review of the recent Star Trek reboot is not only hilarious and insightful, it also deals (especially in the first part) with stuff that we've talked about here and on the Fantasy Films thread: Reboots, remakes, re-imaginings, re-hashes, re-whatever, and why these types of films are getting made.

Warning: The review is over an hour. But it certainly doesn't feel that long.

BTW, I think this reviewer is a genius. I could listen to his schtick all day.
