CombatActions txt file
« on: October 05, 2014, 10:23:16 AM »
I noticed the CombatActions .txt files showing up in the module design folder. Is that supposed to happen automatically, or is there a way to change the settings so these logs are not generated? Even a small battle with 4 enemies will create up to 8 of these files. When I wasn't paying attention, I had played through a larger battle and then found 43 CombatActions files in the folder.

I know this is a valuable reference for testing. But I would rather not have to delete all these .txt files after every session.

Sorry about that.  There is no need to delete them.
They are small.

Eventually we will add an option to produce these files.
I fear that many other needs have higher priority.

No problem, I wasn't sure if I had done something wrong... at first glance, I thought these were error reports. But I had no issues in combat, so I was confused. Hmph.

They are small files, I just don't like the clutter, ha! Like you said, not a high priority at all.

I don't know if this is as small an issue as you think it is Paul. In doing testing, I'm using monsters with 5 attacks, PCs with 2 attacks each, who are repeatedly engaging then moving away from monsters to test Free Attacks - in a combat of 10 rounds I can generate  about 500 of these files. Trying to find the engine shortcut when I need it next requires me to manage the files first (by which I mean delete them) so that I can easily see the file I need to double-click.
I hadn't realized this was an issue, since I'm working with debug engines.

Is there a way to prevent the game engine from producing CombatActions0000-9999 text files? I find myself deleting them every time I playtest my design. In Windows 10, every time a CombatActions text file gets written to a directory, the window in file explorer brings itself to the front and displays itself in front of the Dungeon Craft engine.

Hopefully they will go away in version 3.27.  They should only
be created in the 'debug' version of the engine.

Maybe there should be separate folder for them, just not to be visible with other more important files.

Importance is relative.

Paul's solution is best - we often need them in debugging, but not in the release mode.

Could the writing of these files be toggled on/off via a line in the config.txt such as: WriteCombatActions=[Y/N] ?

Some existing toggles are controlled by '0' or '1'":

Code: [Select]
Force_SysMem = 1
LOG_ERRORS = 1

So we might as well be consistent and use:

LOG_COMBAT_ACTIONS = 1

Default will be 0 in the release version and 1 in the debug version.

Engine version 3.27 implements a config.txt entry:

LOG_COMBAT_ACTIONS = 1
LOG_COMBAT_ACTIONS = 0

to turn on (or off) the logging of combat actions.

Debug version defaults to 1 and release version defaults to 0.

This is untested.
