A few updated links and ideas
« on: April 25, 2015, 05:49:59 PM »
Below are a few links to some game art from various games and websites that would be usefull for FRUA. Most have been discussed before, but I've found actual links for some of them, plus I'm working on playing a few and grabbing screen shots as I play.

RPG Maker - If you just do a general image search on Google or Yahoo you'll be flooded with tons of items. But if you get specific, some nice things turn up. Do a Yahoo image search for "rpg maker lion" for instance, and a couple of nice sets come up, as well as a nice tiger set a little lower down.

The rogue-like games use tile sets and there's many different good ones out there. An image search of Rogue or Nethack with "sprite" or "sprite sheet" added turns up some nice finds.

Heroes of Might and Magic 1-3. These would be nice combat icons if adapted. All of them are available with the different frame animations athttp://spritedatabase.net/system/pc

Might and Magic series - the first is too basic to be of much use. For Two, the SNES version is supposed to have improved graphics and I'm going to check it out when I can. I remember enjoying 3-5 when they came out, but looking at them now, most of the creatures seem a bit silly looking. Sprites for 3 though 4 can be found at the RPG Shrine link below. Six through 8 can be found at the sprite database link site above. These look like they would work well with FRUA.

The link above also has many other games to look over with good artwork. The Shadows over Mystara game has a nice Gnoll for example.

Wizardry - There's already a few links to some of the Wizardry games here. For 1-3, 5 and 6, the SNES versions have good sprites. The sprites for 5 can be found here - http://www5a.biglobe.ne.jp/~outlaws/wiz_rpg/monster01.htm
The sprites for 6 can be found here - http://www.pekori.jp/~emonoya/monster/6/sfc6m_01.html
For 7, though I haven't tried it, I think you can get the sprites by using the Cosmic forge editor that's available - you might be able to get usable art from 8 as well with this.

Sprites for a few games like Final Fantasy 6 can be found here - http://www.rpglegion.com/sprites/index.htm

Eye of the Beholder - Dungeon Hack has already been done. Sprites for Eye 1 and many other games can be found here - http://www.spriters-resource.com/pc_computer/adndbeholder/

I haven't found sprites for Two, Three or Lands of Lore. I might have to play through these again and grab some sprites.

Bard's Tale - most versions have EGA or worst graphics. The Sprites for one of the better versions, I think Amiga, are here - http://shrines.rpgclassics.com/pc/bardstale1/enemies.shtml

This site also has art from many other games like Shadows over Mystara and the Genesis version of King's Bounty.

I couldn't find anything for Two, Three of Dragon Wars. I'm doing a quick playthough of BT2 for Amiga right now and screen capturing as I go.

I've got quite a few old RPG's sitting on the shelf that I've never complete or even started. I'm finding FRUA is a good excuse to get them out and try them again. At present I'm going through BT2, which I did finish way back when it first came out, and ISHAR 1 which I had never got to.

Actually, retro-EGA mods for UA have been getting quite a bit of discussion, recently...

Thanks Hans.

Small update - If you click on the Wizardry 6 pics on the link above, the gifs will animate and you can save the animated gif to get all the frames. Wizardry 6 was the 1st in the series (I think) to use animated monsters. If you go to the home page for this site, it looks like they have all the wiz games with artwork available for multiple versions. so far going through Wizardry 1 you can see sprites for the VGA as well as the older EGA versions.

There are certain companies that forbade the use of their artwork in FRUA.  I don't remember who they are anymore, but I think the makers of Might & Magic might have been one of them.  Anyone have the list?

Welcome to the forums and thanks for the links! I definitely see some images that I can use for sprites and pics and combat icons.

Thanks for the comments and the link

ProphetSword,

The games I put links to are all owned by companies that are no longer in business. Sirtech, 3DO and New World Computing, and Interplay. Other companies have picked up the rights to the brands, but considering the state of gaming "now" compared to "then", I hope there won't be an issue. If so, I would immediately remove the links.

I have links to current artwork that would work well with FRUA from things like Pathfinder, but since that's still a current and active product I won't be posting those.

Link away.  I was just pointing out why some of this artwork is currently unavailable in the vast artwork we already have for FRUA.  Because, believe me, people have pulled from nearly every available resource over the years.

Yeah, the links are fine. Thanks for them, btw.

The two most well-known franchises that requested FRUA not use their art in any community-created games were New World Computing (Might & Magic) and Interplay (specifically the Bard's Tale series due to their competing Bard's Tale Construction Kit). There were a few others, but I do not recall them.

Ben has the right of it as to why you will find little to no art from those two companies/franchises.

However, I find it unlikely anyone is going to come after the community for using any from them now.

Good to know and kind of what I figured.

I was really happy to find these online without backgrounds behind them so they would be easy to use as combat icons or sprites. Though it looks like I'll have to play through some of the others again like Lands of Lore if I want to have the artwork to use.

There's so many games to go through on some of those sites as well that's there's plenty to look at and go through. RPG maker alone has been out for a long time and with different versions, that there's tons of sprites to go through, though many of them of anime type.

Link below to some very nice fantasy units from Civiliation 2. Since the Civ games cover the world from ancient times to modern, there could be lots of icons here for FRUA that are under represented - Aztec, Egyptian, etc.

And animated units of all types for Civ 3 - Fantasy units near the bottom of the page

Paper minis - has anyone bought/looked at these?

I have a complete set of Steve Jackson's Cardboard Heroes and some of them look nice. Looking around on the web, the Pathfinder pawns and Monster Stand-in sets look nice, D&D's 4th edition Monster Vault not sure, and the Disposable Hero sets too simple.

Pathfinder pawns are fantastic. Not necessarily for FRUA...but for D&D tabletop games.

Thanks.... Answering my own question (I think some of these are Pathfinder Pawns) this site...

http://www.seven-wonders.co.uk/paperfriendsindex.html

Looking around, there seems to be some good links for free paper minis out there as well. I would say that, including all the work done by FRUA members, just about every character type/ monster is pretty well covered at this point in some form of another for pics, sprites or combat icons.

Life is good.
