I think hans meant that they used the palette of a specific pic to subvert the palette of the frame.

Hoo!  I don't remember seeing this, but then my memory is more a sieve than a bowl.

A forced recoloring of the frame set on the fly does present some interesting options, design-wise:  the method could be used to 'blank out' the compass graphics, and coupled with a no-area-view maze would make quite a challenge.

Of course, I don't think even I am that devious...
