Title: Overland Map Editor?
Post by: Ben J on May 12, 2009, 09:06:57 AM
Is there a program that helps you design overland maps for UA? I think I saw something somewhere that at least helped with placing things on a grid, but I can't remember where it was.

Though I will not design a completely new map for "The Sect",  I have some ideas for the game that will come after it. ;)

I know you can edit overland maps with programs like dpaint.  It's really just a picture.

There are templates on rosedragon (dont' ask me where) that have cities and things you can use to modify the existing overland maps.

You might also find a repository of overland maps ready for use there too.

Found some zips at rosedragon that contain map stamps for "neopaint" and dpaint. They will probably be useful.

I remember that there was an example map somewhere that had a grid on it (for better placement of the important spots on the map). Must be somewhere in that huge archive, too.

Probably.  Like you, though, I'm not completely familiar with what all is in there.  Hopefully, if someone knows where it is, they can point you in the right direction.

I found a free map editor , especially for fantasy maps, called AutoRealm ( http://autorealm.sourceforge.net/show.php ).

The resulting maps look a bit schematic, see a screenshot below.

With all the "map stamps" available at rosedragon, I could probably get a nicer looking map.

Nice find!

I find that it helps me to make a grid of 8x8 squares around the outside of a 304x120 image when I am designing a map. I like to place cities in such a way that they are centered within the 8x8 square on the overland map.

I hope this grid helps. I usually start with a base image and do a lot of the artwork by hand.

Awesome.

This is how I handle overland map construction as well.  It lets you see exactly what the player will see when they are moving around, and you can tell immediately where to delineate barriers.  Nice job Nol.

That's great, and very similar to the extremely useful map grid I was looking for in my second posting of this thread (and which I recently rediscovered inside a zip on rosedragon, see it below).

The reason I prefer my own grid, which has the squares located "outside" the 304x120 drawing area is that, as soon as you paste an image into the template, the squares "inside" the drawing area will no longer be visible.

That's right, but the grid can be used as an overlay in photoshop or other programs. So, here's the best of both worlds:   :)

I've been holding off on mentioning layers and such because I happen to like Nol's template. :)

But another thing to use is the grid feature in your paint program. In Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop and the GIMP, the size of grid is definable by the user, so 8x8 over your canvas of 304x120 works great, then you resize the image or cut and paste into a template when you're done. :D

But, I still like Nol's template. ;)

Here is a freeware Relief Map Generator from Greenfish (http://greenfish.extra.hu/downloads.php)

I've played with it a bit, and it looks promising if you like the style.

The old download link for the relief map generator doesn't work anymore. Now it can be found http://www.welshpiper.com/greenfish-relief-map-generator/.

Autorealm is nice, another one to look for is named Dungeoncrafter (no relation at all to the FRUA emulator DC ;))

check it out here: http://www.dungeoncrafter3.com/
personally, I like the version 1 better, tho.

And searching for the above netted this:

that I never heard of, but liked the look of.

ST
ps, as always tho a word of caution: better to get these types of things from the source rather than a fileswapping site (not as likely to virus ;))

Fractal Mapper (http://www.nbos.com/nox/index.php?action=1001&id=144), a program discovered by HellStone.

I found another nice map generator here: http://topps.diku.dk/torbenm/maps.msp

You can use different styles and it works pretty well within the UA scale.

Wow it is amazing. You can set widith and height and it even has download verison. This is just great tool. I recently have downloaded Greyhawk maps from here with p2p but they are really big but also very good. I am hoping they can be used with DC too :D.

http://ghmaps.net/

Edit: It is done with this. It can be used only Non Commercialy and can make 513x513 maps http://www.world-machine.com/
