Title: Game Trading (Was: Is anyone here interested in a free game?)
Post by: Olivier Leroux on September 13, 2014, 07:35:44 AM
I have a few free game codes lying around that I don't need, so if anyone here has a use for them, let me now and I'll gladly gift them to you. The games are:

Warlock - Master of the Arcane (http://store.steampowered.com/app/203630) - a turn-based strategy game in the vein of Civilization, but with a fantasy setting and focus on combat (gifted)
Dungeon Keeper Gold (http://www.gog.com/game/dungeon_keeper) - the classic
Magrunner: Dark Pulse (http://www.gog.com/game/magrunner_dark_pulse) - a first person puzzle game like Portal, based on magnetism and with a Lovecraftian twist

The catch is you'd need a Steam account for the first one or a GOG account for the other two. The GOG account shouldn't require more than an e-mail address to create and it's only required for downloading the games; after that you can store, install and play them completely independent of GOG, as they don't have any DRM/copy protection. In order to run Warlock you'd need to have Steam's client installed on your computer though.

I'd be interested in any of them except Warlock, because I already have it.  Got both a Steam and GoG account.  Let me know if you want to give them to someone else.

Nah, so far you're the first and only applicant and personally I'd be fine with gifting both of them to you. If you'd like to display some particular sportsmanship, you're not in a hurry to play the games and you think anyone else here might be interested, you could e.g. just choose one for now and give others a chance to apply for the second, maybe until the end of the weekend, but I'll leave that up to you. If you want to grab both right now, you can have them. :)

Since I'm going to leave the house in a minute, I'll send you a PM with the codes and you can decide whether to redeem them now or wait a little more for any other reactions.

I just got Warlock free from Humble Bundle a week ago, or I'd have sniped that one. I think i have Dungeon Keeper, too. Need to check my library on GoG.

Haven't had time to play Warlock, yet.

I'm interested in Warlock. I have Dungeon Keeper already and don't have an interest in Magrunner. I love the idea of passing out the extra keys Olivier! I have accounts with:

HumbleBundle.com
GamersGate.com
Gog.com
SteamPowered.com

...and try to scoop up the deals when I see them. I know that I have some dupes in there and will take a look around to post a list tomorrow.

As a quick start, here's a listing that I can gift to others. It's a mix of games that I have dupes of or no interest in playing. As I started reviewing the current list, I realize that I need to really list all that I have and normalize the data. I'm sure this list will grow to at least 2-3 times this size.

A New Beginning - Final Cut
Baldur's Gate Removed until I learn how to gift a gog.com after purchasing.
Batman™: Arkham Asylum GOTY
Batman™: Arkham City GOTY
Batman™: Arkham Origins DLC

Lords of the Realm II Removed until I learn how to gift a gog.com after purchasing.
Lords of the Realm II Siege Pack Removed until I learn how to gift a gog.com after purchasing.

Humble Bundle

GoG

I don't have any non-unlocked codes, right now, however. =/

For the next 23 hours, you can get Receiver for free from the Humble Store (https://www.humblebundle.com/store/p/receiver_storefront) (for Steam only).

"Receiver was created for the 7-day FPS challenge to explore gun handling mechanics, randomized levels, and unordered storytelling. Armed only with a sidearm and an audiocassette player, you must uncover the secrets of the Mindkill in a building complex infested with automated turrets and hovering shock drones."

As a quick start, here's a listing that I can gift to others.

I have no shortage of games to play, so maybe someone else might be able to appreciate these more, but if you just want to get rid of spare keys, I'd be mildly interested in trying Hammerwatch, King's Quest VII or Terraria. Are all three of them Steam keys?

Sorry, you must have a Steam account for those games to work.  Also, I don't want to bog the thread down, so if anyone wants to talk about me gifting a game or trading for it, contact me with a personal message.

Any suggestions of how to gift a game from gog.com? I see how to do it during the purchase process; but, not after.

I don't think it can be done after you have purchased it for yourself, i think it only can be gifted before.

Like Rainbower said, you can only gift a game from gog.com if you bought it as a gift. In that case the gift code is stored in your Library under Gifts. If you just bought it without checking the gift box and it appears in your library shelf, you can't give it away. The GOG staff is usually quite accommodating and they can turn shelved games into gift codes after mispurchases if you ask nicely and under the condition that you haven't downloaded anything related to the game yet. But I'd guess that they are more willing to do it right after the purchase and maybe less so if the game's already been sitting on your shelf for quite a while.

From a recent bundle I also have these Steam keys for two small indie RPGs, anyone interested in them can have them for free:

Battlepaths (http://store.steampowered.com/app/296050/) (gifted)
Steam & Steel Episode 1 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/310450/)

The GOG keys for Dungeon Keeper Gold (http://www.gog.com/game/dungeon_keeper) and Magrunner: Dark Pulse (http://www.gog.com/game/magrunner_dark_pulse) are still available, since Ben renounced them, so if anyone else wants them, let me know.

I have to say that i am not in the mood to register at Steam, probably i am making a mistake, but for now i like GOG.com a lot. For Magrunner it doesn't look like a game i would play a lot, though i could take it but only if no one else doesn't really wan't it. I can do without it, and btw somehow i got Dungeon Keeper Gold which is a great game though i am not in the mood to really play it. I guess Ad&d could make me move :), i probably should play some Ultima, and continue Fallout story from this spring.

I still have plenty of games as well that I'm willing to gift to people who use Steam or Origin.  I'll also trade for them if anyone has something they want to give away.  I'm not picky, and it's not necessary to trade anything either.  I just want to see these keys used.

Not a trade offer, just a heads-up for anyone interested:

Little Big Adventure (GOG) is currently available for free on GOG's frontpage (http://www.gog.com/) (for another hour only, but I've got one spare copy to give away if you missed it).
Metro 2033 (Steam) is currently available for free on the Humble Store's frontpage (https://www.humblebundle.com/store?free&utm_source=Humble+Bundle+Newsletter&utm_campaign=5271c92f15-Humble_Store_1st_Birthday&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_990b1b6399-5271c92f15-126180861) (for another 11 hours).

Now Mount and Blade is free on GOG until Friday, and you can get The Witcher 2 for free, too, if you "collect stamps" for a weeks (meaning you have to log in each day and click on a stamp; somewhat annoying task but only takes a minute each day and I guess that's a small price for a big action RPG like The WItcher 2.)

Came here to tell everyone about Mount and Blade.  Didn't see the thing about The Witcher 2, but that's okay...already got that game on Steam.  As usual, Olivier beat me to the punch anyway.

Btw, in case you didn't know, if you already bought The Witcher 2 from a different source, you are eligible to a free GOG copy anyway. Just use your product code to redeem it here (http://www.gog.com/witcher/backup). Might be worth it for some extras or a DRM-free backup.

Omg, I missed it. Well, better to be ready for the next one. I probably should register on Steam too :)

You missed Mount & Blade, yeah, but I think it's not too late for The Witcher 2, the promo still runs for seven days (until Nov 25), so if you collect stamps each day starting from today, you should get a copy, too. (Including a copy of the movie "The Gamers: Director's Cut", but I'm not sure if that's worth it.)

No idea what's up with GOG.com, but they're having another sale already, and this time you can get the turn-based strategy classic Age of Wonders for free (limited amount of copies, currently 240k left).

No i didn't, last stamp i needed was on 25th and on that day it was gone, i hoped i could get a stamp last day but i was wrong it seems. I checked promo video, that game was really good, but i probably i wouldn't have time to play it.

Btw thanks for info about Age of Wonders, that one is really nice and i am glad i could get it. 60k left.

I still have a spare code for Witcher 2 as I already own the game, the code will expire on Dec 31 if it isn't used and I haven't found anyone who's still interested in it. If you think your computer can run it and there's a chance you might try it one day, you can have it.  :)

Ok here is something from Christmas, there are English programs but lot more German. Programs are free but you will probably need to download and install them and then ask for activation code to be able to activate and fully use them. They work for a day but maybe there will be time at the end when they will all work again for a short time, half is passed but there is still some more. I didn't wanted to open separate thread, but if that is needed i will. Here is the link, wishing everyone Happy Hollidays! http://www.mostiwant.com/blog/xmas-calendar-2014-giveaways/?PageSpeed=noscript

Here is something interesting, new version of Windows 10 but it is Beta, and it is free for download, as enterprise edition. I have heard this from FB friend who has installed it on his laptop and he saids that it is ok and that works good. I plan to install it too, though it will not be easy, but on the good side my old computer barely meets minimum requirements.

I would be very careful about installing that for a couple of reasons.  You have to know what you're getting into.

First off, there may not be driver support for every device out there.  Don't be surprised if your printer/video card/sound card/mouse/whatever doesn't work correctly anymore.  It takes time for the companies who supply the drivers to update them to the newest OS, and that usually doesn't start happening until close to release time.

Secondly, when the OS releases, you will have to uninstall and go back to your previous OS.  It's only "free" during the evaluation period so that you can help the company locate bugs so that they can hammer out the issues for the full release.

In addition, the system might crash sometimes.  This is normal.  Again, this is what the evaluation period is for.

Finally,  you have to be good with technology to get some things to work sometimes.  This involves researching things, figuring out workarounds, or finding other ways to accomplish things if need be (like dual-booting into another OS).

Have fun, but don't expect it will be a permanent change.

Thank You, i was wondering about that, and i guess You are right. I probably shouldn't install it then, as release of new version will be in the middle of next year. I hoped i will be able to work with it after a release, but nm then.

You can, but you have to log in through Steam once in a while to verify your ownership of the game.  So, depending on how often you're online, you may or may not be able to make offline mode work.

This looks fantastic, I like how Steam works it even have windowed version of games. Wish I could have separate installer like GOG but nm it is still great, there are even free games on both Steam and Origin.

Ok I am interested for:
Age of Wanders: Shadow Magic
Talisman: Digital Edition

This weekend you can get a free Steam key for Avencast - Rise of the Mage (http://store.steampowered.com/app/46410/?l) from Bundle Stars (http://www.bundlestars.com/) (just scroll down to the end of the page). I've already played through it last year, and I've found it to be a quite decent action RPG focused on spellcasting that's definitely worth a try.

It's not perfect, it's low budget and a bit unpolished (I wrote down my impression on the GOG forums (http://www.gog.com/forum/general/games_finished_in_2014/post566) at that time and they list quite a few problems), but all in all, I don't regret playing it, it had some pretty neat ideas and the combat system was fun.

I really dislike these deals where, to get a free game, you have to go through a bunch of steps that involve giving away your email address, signing in with Facebook, following on Twitter and the like.  I will give away my email address (being as I have a throw-away email address for that purpose), but some of the other things are starting to be a bit much.  I shouldn't be forced to "like" something on Facebook, especially when I haven't even played it yet to know if I can even tolerate it...let alone like it.

Okay, I'm done ranting.

Yeah, I hate those, too, as I don't even have a Facebook or Twitter account and if I had one, especially one connected to my real life, I certainly wouldn't use it to get freebies in exchange for promoting each and every company. But like Milos said, I think in this case it's totally optional? I haven't tried it myself though, as I already got the game on Steam. Anyway, you're not really missing out on something, there are certainly better RPGs around; I just thought it might interest those who've already played most of them and are curious about lesser known titles, as I thought it quite enjoyable after making an effort to get into it.

EDIT: Okay, I tried it myself now and it seems you actually do have to log into Facebook. That sucks. Sorry, I wouldn't have posted the link if I had been aware of that.  >:(

It's not a trouble sometimes.  The problem is when they want to have access to your friends list or post on your page.  And I wouldn't have cared as much if it had been the company that gave away the game...but instead it's some secondary company called "Coupons.com," which has "sketchy" written all over it.

Not an RPG, but if you hurry to GOG.com, you can snag a free copy of "Rise of the Triad" as part of their FPS sale.  They've only got 14,000 left to give away out of the 30,000 they started with, so if you want it, don't delay.

Also here are lots of indie games that are not that bad http://www.desura.com

Battlepaths is a decent little game.  I got it from someone right here on these forums a couple of months back.  Very fun hack and slash turn-based Diablo-style game.  I recommend it as a time waster.  If you want a serious hardcore RPG, it won't fill that need, though.

That is true I played it today, but I need to get 3rd level of steam because then I might get some other free games like Civilization 3 and 4 which I really like, somehow I didn't got it when in November Donnie sent me. And I still have only half of user rights there, need to buy something or to get a gift to unlock it full. I don't like wasting time on Steam games mostly but sometimes there can be few games like Civilization or Age of Wonders like that can be a good source of inspiration :). That is what I was thinking about, GOG.com is much more serious with downloadable games even Desura is good :), but sticking to the Ad&d that i can modify to suit my tastes, only problem is my knowledge still.

Got it, thanks.

For those of you who like modern games (like Dragon Age: Origins), Humble Bundle currently has an Origin bundle (requires the Origin client).  You can pick up quite a few good games at a very low price (five games for $1.00, more games for a higher price).  These aren't free, but they're at a good price for those who want them.

For a payment of $5.00, you could get the following:
Dragon Age: Origins
Peggle
Dead Space 2
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault War Chest
Command & Conquer - Generals
Plants & Zombies - Garden Warfare
Dragon Age 2
Bejeweled 3
Mass Effect 2

(plus five more games that will be added on Tuesday, which you get automatically).

Thank You. I have to say that I have changed my mind about Steam games :) and others like Origin and Desura so if someone have any that are unused I guess I could take them, though for now I don't have any games on my own yet to give in exchange.

Btw here is something interesting where You can get games for free only trouble for me is that I need to have Steam Account Lv3 in order to pick them up. You can see all games that are available to get here and You can play activity games/do some activites or just log daily to get points (I have 300 for now but can't spend them) http://www.tremorgames.com/index.php?action=shop

Other thing i sumbled upon is Gift of Games where You can pick up or gift games but trouble for me is to get 300 karma (300 likes of my post on forum) to be able to enter the giveaways http://www.reddit.com/r/GiftofGames

Also I started playing this and got one Desura game :) http://www.galagiveaways.com/home

Well If someone can help me with any of these It would be cool. Also I need to figure out how to pay from my account in bank in Monenegro to abroad like games, programs ect. We don't have paypall here but my dad is telling me that I can pay with that but I am not sure. Need to figure out the way to do it :)

Enclave

I often see Enclave being bundled and sold for next to nothing or even given away for free, and it might convey the impression that it's a shitty game hardly worth your attention which makes me a little sad, because it's among my favorite games. I really loved it and thought it was a very immersive and enjoyable fantasy FPS with a great soundtrack. It's divided into levels and in between levels you can switch characters and choose equipment depending on which player characters you already met in the game and how many gold pots you managed to find in the levels, so there's some replayability, too, as you could replay the same level as a sword-wielding fighter, a crossbow shooting sniper or a magic-user with different staffs. It also consists of two campaigns, one for the light side, one for the dark side, so you also get to play pillaging orcs and the likes. It can be a bit diffcult and unforgiving on Normal difficulty because there is no saving during a level, but on Easy you get one checkpoint and once you reach it, you won't have to start from the beginning of the level anymore, no matter how often you die. Anyway, I recommend anyone who thinks this sounds somewhat interesting to try it if given the opportunity.

Origin is currently offering a free download of Ultima VIII: Pagan - Gold Edition from their game store.  This requires you to have an Origin account and to have their game store client installed.  A lot of their old games don't require the client to be running once the game has been installed to access it (Sims 2 Complete Edition, which they gave away last Summer, plays just fine without the game client running, for example).

You can find out more here:

https://www.origin.com/en-us/store/buy/ultima-8/pc-download/base-game/gold-edition# (https://www.origin.com/en-us/store/buy/ultima-8/pc-download/base-game/gold-edition#)

You didn't miss it.  They're still giving away Ultima VIII.  If you have the Origin launcher, just go to STORE, click on "Free Games" and go to "On the House."  You will see Ultima VIII in there.

Origin is always giving away a game for free.  Recently they gave away Syndicate, Wing Commander III, Bejeweled 3, Dragon Age: Origins and The Sims 2 - Complete Edition (which was the Sims 2 with all the expansions).  So, about once a month they switch it out for something new.

EDIT:
After reading your message again, I may have misunderstood you.  Are you saying you missed it now or you missed it during the Humble Bundle?

True Ultime 8 is still free on Origin. You need their downlader and after You add it there it stays in Your library and You can install it whenever You wish. I got Syndicate and Ultime 8 for now, but hoping for more.

Interesting, it does not seem to be available to me. I wonder whether it might be because I am in Australia? I did get Syndicate a little while ago and now the only game they have "on the house", for me, seems to be Amazing Adventures The Caribbean Secret. Am I missing something. (Well, obviously I am, but is there something else I should be doing?)

I have to say that I like Ultima and this one might be very good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAtk6rd3Gmo I have part 4 and Ultima Worlds of Adventure 2 on GOG.com and I will probably try to play it someday though not sure when.

My current plan is to collect all nice looking sprites that can be used with DC from games like RPG maker, Age of Wonders, Civilization, Ultima and alike and to sort them and try making something of it. And I should be back playing Neverwinter Offline beside learning to work with 3D art programs. Also I need to download those EGA icons from Rosedragon and sort them :) they are very inspiring especialy Baldur's Gate characters.

The current Humble Weekly bundle (https://www.humblebundle.com/weekly) offers several RPGs for a small price.

Lower tier (min $1):
- Paper Sorceror (short indie RPG in the old school style of Might & Magic, with a black and white art style reminiscent of book illustrations; Steam + DRM-free)
- FATE: Hero Edition (two older action RPGs reminiscent of Torchlight; Steam + DRM-free)
- bit dungeon II (seems to be a rogue-like but in the style of Zelda; Steam only)

Beat the average tier (min ~$5):
- Pier Solar and the Great Architects (JRPG with classic and HD mode; Steam + DRM-free)
- SanctuaryRPG: Black Edition (ASCII RPG; Steam + DRM-free)
- Rollers of the Realm (pinball with RPG elements; Steam only)

Highest tier (min. $8)
- Agarest: Generations of War Collector's Edition (another JRPG, apparantly with grid-based tactical combat; Steam only)

It looks like Humble's e-mail system is overwhelmed with the traffic at the moment, I don't get any e-mails from them either. But I checked my Humble account and the free 'purchase' was registered and the game there already, so the issue seems to be restricted to the e-mail system, not the code distribution. Just be a little more patient, the promo still runs until Sunday evening, and they probably reserved a copy of that game for you already; it's just the e-mail taking this long (hours!).

It's not a remake, it's a new story. And yeah, Episode 1 only. I hear that each episode has its own conclusion, but I can't confirm since I haven't played it myself yet.

I see ;D it is like Secret of the Monkey Island. It is the same name and there is story with chapters that are separate games. I have to say that this one looks just great, I have started in the woods and found well and climbed down to it where is a some treasure and secret doors to the cave hideout. Then I uninstalled it. But voice was great, it is something like grandad tells a story to his grandson.

Looks nice, I have started to write my books again and had a productive weekend but at the end started to play Steam Linux games.

One that is worth mentioning is Forge of Gods with really great 2d scrolling style RPG action. Everything is well done, art is amazing and there are many creatures that can be leveled up and combined, there are few chapters and I almost finished 1st but only thing that is downside is that You can play certain amount of time daily and after that need to wait for needed elements for battle to recharge. Still worth a look, I wish I could find art files for this game, there is so much nicely drawn creature.

Here is how it looks like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gy5en2wA1qM

I sent you PM.  If you want it and are that interested in it, I will gift it to you.  I want it to go to someone who will actually play it, as it's quite good to people who like the board game or who are willing to learn how to play it.  Best part:  Even if you only have the base game, you can play with someone who has all the expansions and they will be available to you while you play with them.

Gone Home is currently free on itch.io (https://gonehome.itch.io/gonehome) (no registering required, just a download link). For everyone who doesn't know, it's a story-telling experience with a 'mystery'/young adult theme, you basically walk around a house looking at stuff in order to figure out what happened.

Also, is there anyone here interested in Never Alone (Kisuma Ingitchuna) - Arctic Collection (http://store.steampowered.com/app/295790/)? I have a spare Steam key for it and everyone already seems to own it. It's a puzzle platformer about Inuit folklore.

Yes I do, white fox is very nice character, and girl also :) but those guys behind scenes are really making game stand out. No time to play it though :) I will when I have free time as CT Special Forces: Fire for Effect. 2 games that are most interesting lately on Steam for me, and they work great. Also on GOG Age of Wonders but I have not played it for some time and lately I got that Talisman but somehow I still can't get how it works, and Cardhunter that is for free somehow is mcuh more interestin. I used to play it a lot before but lost my login :/ I was thinking to start it again but ... probably will play Talisman first :) now back to DC, need to finish my Ogre (Magi), but first cup of cocoa :)

Talisman is based upon the board game of the same name.  You can find the rules available online here:

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/talisman/

Go down to SUPPORT, click on RULES, and find the PDF file for "Talisman Core Rulebook." (The other books are for the expansions...I recommend learning how to play the core game before investing in expansions).  Download the PDF and read it.  It will tell you how to play.  Failing that, try watching YouTube videos.

BARRIER X is currently free on Steam.  Very light arcade-style action game that should run on most computers.  Fun when you only have five minutes to play something and you want to beat your previous score.  Get it here (requires Steam):

My problem with the games given out by IndieGala is that they always expect you to allow their partners to have access to your Facebook page.  You can get the game and immediately remove them from Facebook, but it's still a pain for a game that isn't that highly rated.  So, be aware of that if you decide to pursue this one.

Eschalon: Book One is free from now on GOG (https://www.gog.com/game/eschalon_book_i) and the developer's site, Basilisk Games (http://basiliskgames.com/purchase-games/), and it sounds like it will be free on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/25600/), too, starting tomorrow. It's the first in a trilogy of turn-based indie CRPGs, maybe similar to Ultima, and Book One should last 20+ hours alone.

Cheers for the heads - grabbed it but will more than likely get the rest of saints editions off steam for the support package.  Also, from your 11 April notice, I completed my GOG D&D collection with Demon's Stone for 1.39 usd :D

Fantasy General is one of my all-time favorite games. I even have the old guidebook for it. I re-bought the game from GoG a couple years ago. Played it for a few months ... ahhhhh

Also, sorry I have been extremely non-active of late. Life. I still check in every couple of days and watch for emails and the like.

Not sure if it's worth mentioning here and whether this is the right place, since it's neither a freebie nor a trade offer, but GOG has Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas now as well. All are offered as complete (though English language only) versions with all the DLCs, so they're not that cheap, but currently discounted by 50%. Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is discounted by 75%.

These games were already avaivable as digital downloads on Steam, of course, so this news will only matter to those who'd prefer a self-contained, DRM-free version.
