PREVIEW: Snake-Priestess of Venus!
« on: April 11, 2018, 12:21:11 PM »
A month or two back, I was trying to think of a small mod idea that I could complete in short amount of time.  I did a Ravenloft-ish one last year (http://ua.reonis.com/index.php?topic=3505.0), so for this one I wanted to try a different genre.

I came up with a plot for a Buck Rogers mod which I call "Snake-Priestess of Venus!" and which I really liked.

However, when I looked at the state of our Buck Rogers hacks, I judged them as still incomplete, particularly the Items hacks which left lots of unused items.  Also, the Combat Icons and Wildernesses which GoldBoxFan used in his BR Worldhack, while true to SSI's original palette, were incompatible with our large library of UA icons.

So, I'm doing a lot of work to fashion some hacks that suit me better.  Here's an example:

If I squeal in excitement, it is only because someone besides me is doing something with a Buck Rogers mod.

Wheee!

I feel the need to replace that Font, however.  I'd love to have a version that used all shortened letters, as only some of the above are.  The problem with that existing Font is that it uses all big letters in the Text events, which I feel makes for rather painful reading with full boxes.

It would be easy for me to edit that Font if I still had my old computer that could run either of the Font editing programs.  Unfortunately, that computer is dead and my new one can't run 'em.  But I'll put off making that change for awhile.

Right now, I'm still doing some basic art hacks, like the new Walls I'll need and Backdrops.

Eventually, I'll tackle the Item hacks.  When I do, I'll start a new thread on the Hacking UA board.  I'd like to fully document all the Items similar to what you did with SHUA's, Nol.   :)

What Font editing programs?  Are they DOS based? (...And if so, why not use DosBox to run them?)

If they are indeed 16-bit Windows based, then you can install VirtualBox to emulate a fake PC. It is completely free software.
https://www.virtualbox.org/

You would need an operating system though. Linux is free, and it can run Wine, which can run Windows programs.
If you happen to have an old Windows CD, you could install it within VirtualBox, on the emulated hardware that it provides. It should run just fine; and should accept most programs that will run on that version of Windows.

Looks great hans!

Isn't it funny (and unfortunate) how FRUA allows for both uppercase and lowercase fonts, but then mixes them up so badly in the game that it is virtually hopeless to use different uppercase and lowercase letters. I guess they never imagined that people would want to hack their game.

Anyway, I'll see if I can produce an all-shortened Buck Rogers font for you to use. Any requests for any special characters?

Thanks, Steve!   :D

For special characters, whatever BR Font used is fine.  I'd like to preserve that distinctive old-style digital look while just making it an easier read.   :)

Here is your font.

I copied all the lowercase letters to uppercase, and then I translated (almost all) the characters up one pixel, so the font would be vertically centred in menu buttons.

I also noticed that the quotation marks (which look like "66" with this font) looked a bit strange when used to close a quote, so I changed the "%" character (shift + 5) into a closing quotation mark. However, if you would prefer to have the "%" character back, please let me know.

If there is anything that is annoying you, or which you would just like me to tweak, please let me know and I'd be happy to do it.

Wow!  It's a thing of beauty, Steve!  Many thanks!   :notworthy:

I don't anticipate needing the "%" sign, and if I ever should I could simply write out "percent," but it's possible that other future authors might bemoan the loss.

The half-and-half BR Font does do the 66 thingee, but I noticed that the original all large BR Font used a 69 effect, as seen in the below screencap.  Perhaps some folks might prefer that over losing the "%" sign.  I can't remember whether the "%" is ever seen in the game as part of some default text...

What do you think?

My preference is for the "66" and "99". I don't think "%" appears in the default text, though I stand to be corrected.

But, in any case, here is another version of the font that uses the "69" for quotes and preserves the "%".

Many thanks, again, Steve!  Both versions are terrific!   :hello2:

I encourage you to UL both to the UA File Archive.

When I click on this link, it takes me to a YouTube screen with an exclamation point and no video. What am I doing wrong?

That's a new one on me; I'd not seen that before today, (it just happened to me too). The link worked when I posted it.

Here is the same video, on a different link.
