Portrait Wizard
« on: February 17, 2018, 05:55:54 PM »
Don't know if anyone has seen the program "Portrait Wizard" that's available on Steam.  It allows you to create portraits that can then be used for whatever purposes you want (even commercial uses).  I have it.  Even though it creates the portraits in a similar style, there is a lot of variation.  Using something like Photoshop, you could probably come up with even more variations and ideas.

Here are four examples I created that you can feel free to use in DC.  If anyone wants, I could create more.

It looks quite interesting, and I guess the resulting pictures could also be "uatuized", for example.

These look nice, ProphetSword.

If you want to do more, I would really love to have a nice selection of Drow/Dark Elf portraits. I am the kind who doesn't think elves should have facial hair, if that is of any consideration. I don't know what kind of control you have over the skin colors, but (as long as I'm requesting) I would like the dark elves to be, er, darker. ;)

I tweaked the one from above and did a new one.  Is this the kind of dark you would want?

Also, in case anyone is interested what Portrait Wizard looks like, I've taken some screenshots of me using it to create a female vampire character.  It is very simple to use.

The final screenshot shows what you can do if you want to drop it in another art program like Photoshop or Gimp.  In this case, I attempted to make it look like an old EGA style image.

If you're the kind of person who wishes they could make their own portraits for a project, it's worth the $20 (or less, if you can get it on sale).

I'm guessing that the program has a folder (or a .dll) for its core artwork (a bunch of .PNG files). Does it allow for import of new parts? (Custom eyes, noses, face, ears, tattoos; and hair... etc)

This one looks capable of some pretty good results. With some D&D custom artwork assets added, it might allow for Gold box style portrait generation. :)

______________
A few months ago I experimented with making a template file for FRUA/DC portraits, that would have used Dragonbones. I had to put it on hold, but it's still an interest of mine; one I plan to finish.

** Probably the most impressive collection I've ever seen—of game portraits, is the combined library of all the NPCs in the King's Bounty series.  They can reuse any of them, in any new game, and they are all first rate illustrations, as game art goes. But those are individual portraits by some very talented artist(s); and probably took years.

It does have a folder with multiple sub folders that includes PNG files.  I will test to see if you can add one and let you know what the results are...

Okay, I created a PNG file of the appropriate size (1210x1210) and replaced one of the graphics in the program.  Couldn't add it as a new one.  But, the graphic did show up in the program itself.  Screenshots illustrate this:

Since I was in the mood, I made four more for your enjoyment (including another drow elf):

There is most likely an index of Z depth given to each image category. Unless editable, one would have to replace hair with hair, iris with iris, weapon with weapon, etc...

It's interesting that the iris asset seems to be 1210 x 1210 itself.    Hopefully when the program comes out of Beta, the finished version will allow imported assets (and have a tutorial), rather than the need to hack-in custom imagery.

All images are 1210x1210, regardless of body part. Only reason I couldn’t add a new image is that I had chosen “iris” for my experiment, and all the spaces on the image for the menu had been taken. I don’t know what method is used to add new menu pages, but I imagine if I had chosen a menu page that wasn’t full, I could have added the image there and named the file appropriately and it would have worked out fine.

It might be possible to replace weapon assets with anything. It's a matter of what gets layered top-most.

I do not have the program, but I would assume that the categories are fixed/immutable, unless they support it in the app. I doubt (but don't know) that it just exists in a config file that can be user edited.

It may be that the developer plans to sell booster-packs, as it were; additional content. If so, they might not be open to supporting user imports. But if enough customers request an import feature, they might include it.

I think the variable lighting effect that it offers, is a pretty neat feature for a portrait generator utility. :)
(...and the ability to offset the iris.)

Very nice, ProphetSword. :D The new darker dark elves are exactly what I am looking for. 8D

As for the non-dark elves, I like them, too. In fact, I think some of these will make their way into the default DC package. Actually, I have beeen looking to replace all of the PC portraits, so should you be so inspired... ;)

Default DC has a female and male human of each class, and a female and male for each non-human race. No pressure, I will use whatever I can get.
Oh, and if they could be at 352x422, we could have them for both resolutioins. :D

I’ll start working on it. Also, I have the original portrait images which are rather large PNG files. I could upload those in the future if you want to resize them yourself to different sizes for various resolutions.
