It's good that you asked, Steve, I found a few minor mistakes/things which could be improved... :) But the animation below shows how it works in general...

Whoa - that is really impressive!  Great work - and great understanding of how the walls work (they still confound me!).

The walls above do make a very different-feeling dungeon, etc.

It would be quite difficult to make a combat walls set that matches, though (same as for my experiment misty mountain) - but we could still work around it!

You do have a point. There are many surroundings we can do with the walls in the 3d view, but not with combat walls. But I regard the latter as quite symbolic anyway.

That looks really great. :D

Says the guy that can't draw combat walls, wouldn't you do a chasm wall? The principle seems the same if you think of the chasm as the thing that overlays the floor...

I guess a chasm combat wall is possible (more than, e.g., a train combat wall :) ), but I think the chasm would probably look a little squeezed and stretched since the opening would have to be quite wide for the walls going from left to right. I will give it a try. (Would anyone use that kind of combat wall, by the way? :) )

Additionally, a chasm wall for the 3d view might be interesting, too. I remember I tried to do a kind of brook wall once, but was not totally convinced in the end. BUT, I think things like these are easier to do Uatu-style than with black outlines...

I certainly can't promise I'd use it, but I'd love to see you try it.

I admit I would like give it a try, too... :D Could be interesting for similar things (e.g. rivers or lava streams...)

Not only do I think it would be fun to use, but if we can do a chasm combat wall, we can make a rooftop combat wall. ;) that I know i would love to use.

I see some ways to optimize the "cliff combat walls" a little more, but I think they work this way...

I had to make a few "compromises" in form of small ledges (some are indicated by red arrows) to get a natural look - otherwise, the horizontal edges of the cliffs would have looked too "clean" (like a straight line). I think rooftops will in some ways be easier, in others more complicated.

That looks amazing! You had far fewer issues than I thought you would have, some in degree of the problem.

All crashing bugs and game-stopper bugs dealt with, I will get back to feature requests, and eventually (already on the list but no time-frame) I want to have a serious talk about a new kind of Combat event, that works like the current one, but uses the the same kind of graphics that we would use for Overland levels. We'll talk about this at a later time.

You always impress me with your work, Dinonykos.

Well, with Uatu's approach of using quite a consistent palette with only a few colours, it is easier to do combat walls than with my own approach with a lot of shading.

But thanks!  :D

This is an example of how I do the combat walls - I try to put the different slots in all possible combinations and play around until everything seems to fit... :)

Pretty similar to the one that I use - which is the one many FRUA people use.

But would your template not ignore a few combinations?
(See attachment...)

To be honest, I am not sure if my template covers all possibilities...
