POLL: What's your native language?
« on: April 22, 2009, 05:38:47 AM »
It's time for another suspicious community census!  :P

Since Ben brought up the question of non-English speaking UA communities (I don't believe they exist, but who knows), I thought it might be interesting to bring up the question of native tongues within this international but English-speaking community.

As always feel free to suggest more options or criticize the choice of given ones (I know there's lots to criticize so don't hesitate to point it out).

I noticed you didn't include languages like Russian, Japanese or Chinese.

That's because I wanted the Russian, Japanese or Chinese UA addicts to speak up for themselves.  :P

No, seriously, like I said the choice of languages presented here is debatable since it's mostly based on languages I know or of which I suspect they might be represented in the UA community. The choice is subjective, eurocentric and perhaps even offensive to some people (if there are Swiss or Austrian FRUAites here for example they probably won't like that I put only Germany and "Other" for German). Sorry for that. I just didn't want to list 30 or more options here when in the end no one will vote for them. As soon as any "Other" option gets a vote I'll take care to be more specific. :)

Ghaaroth was from Russia, I think.  I don't believe he's around anymore, tho...

I'm not trying to be critical, but you could have added a few other options if you have eliminated some.  Is it really necessary to include a multitude of English variants?  At the end of the day, it's the same language.  There are some minor differences, but I could also argue that here in the United States, English varies based on region.  It can be different depending on if you're in New York, California, Alabama or Ohio.

Just my thoughts.

Ben, you're right of course.  :)

As far as languages go, especially if it's about written language in UA, "English" would have been sufficient. This goes to show what I actually wanted to find out is where you're from.  :-[ Talk about suspicious community census....  ;D

I don't mind adding or removing otions and I don't mind if you do.

On the other hand, at least we have a little variety in the votes now, instead of just 6 votes for English and my own.  :D

Nah, you should do it however you want.  I was just saying that you could have squeezed more options in by eliminating some others.  However you want to pursue the poll is up to you.

So..uh..with this list, I imagine we *could* see some UA mods translated?  Or at least feature other languages, n'est pas?

I think Steve Gustafson had thought about doing a mod entirely in Latin (the dead language, not something hip spoken by Latinos).

I wish Steve would start writing mods again, no matter how unusual an idea he has.  He's one of my favorites.

Since you didn't have a choice for Texan, I picked U.S. English.   ;)

Yep, I looked for Texan too, but it can pass for US English.
Some days it just doesn't pay to gnaw through the straps.

Another German here. However, I like my films and games in English if they weren't German in the original (most localisations are bad to horrible, and some things just don't translate well).
