Looking for a Forgotten Realms location
« on: April 14, 2015, 11:47:24 AM »
I'm not too knowledgeable on the entire Forgotten Realms setting, but I am looking to do a module that does take place in the FR setting but I am looking for something specific, and I believe there are a bunch of people here that know the setting really well.

I'm looking for a more mundane town that is somewhat near by a large town noted for it's large Library. And near the mundane town, possibly some caves or mountains near by.

Any location similar to that anyone can think of? And possibly a map of that area would be helpful too (But I'm sure I can possibly do a google search for that as well, once I know the names of some areas/towns).

For me Arabel is good starting place of my adventures :), it is near Suzail capital of Cormyr kindom and there are mountins to NW and NE for adventuring. Good thing about Arabel is that it is large town where Tymore (godess of adventurers and luck) showed up during times of troubles. Here are maps first one being 2e and probably ok for anything and next one is a bit more expanded but without mountains to nort, and 3rd is 3e version which is a bit complicated for me. Also there are lot of small towns around that can be used for any smaller quest, I guess most famous Eveningstar of them.

Next one probably would be somewhere near Waterdeep possible Triboar or Longsaddle. Waterdeep is good place of adventure and there are some mountains to the NW. Here is map http://db4sgowjqfwig.cloudfront.net/map_images/70207/Loudwater_Regional_Map.jpg

Eventualy You could place your adventure in Baldur's gate or any other place near Athkatla which is good town as mountains are near and Candlekeep as the greatest library in the realms. Here are maps

I would say Loudwater is a good choice.

It has some official details you can build upon. It is near(ish) to Waterdeep (400 miles) . Mountains and forests nearby, as is a swamp (each within 100 mi).

I was going to suggest you download all the free .pdfs at WOTC of 1st and 2nd edition modules, but they finally upheld their threat. You can only get 9 items free as .pdfs, and I'm not sure any of them would be useful :

http://www.dndclassics.com/browse.php?pto=0&pfrom=0

Many of the .pdfs that were free are now $4.99.

Candlekeep is a good choice since you can look at Baldur's Gate hints for maps of the surrounding terrain and what is there, providing these also aren't gone.

The old site is gone, they moved it here: https://web.archive.org/web/20131231084536/http://www.planetbaldursgate.com/
