The Dude In: Hotel California
« on: April 07, 2015, 11:18:56 AM »
A new adventure for Dungeon Craft is now available.

The Dude In: Hotel California

"A way out west there was a fella, fella I want to tell you about, fella by the name of Jeff Lebowski. At least, that was the handle his lovin' parents gave him, but he never had much use for it himself. This Lebowski, he called himself the Dude." This prequel to The Big Lebowski attempts to explain why the Dude hates the Eagles.

I had a quick look at it (like 15 minutes) and I think you have a great way of story telling. I also like how you incorporated the movie screencaps.

The 3d view is of course kind of irritating with the medieval walls used for a modern setting - I see we should do some more modern-looking walls. I also wondered if in such a game, wall graphics could completely be left out and only backgrounds (maybe also screencapped) used instead.

Anyway, I will surely spend more time with this. Should I watch the movie before playing again or does it make sense to play the game first and watch the movie afterwards?

Movie knowledge might enhance your experience, but it is not mandatory. You should watch the movie as often as necessary to attain optimal Dudeness.

I encountered some problems with the design, and at one point the game crashed with the message:

"Fatal Error in RunEvent
0x000021ac"

I can send the "UafErr_Engine.txt" file if that helps to Manikus/Paul.

Until the crashing, I enjoyed the game - If you like, Nol, I can send you some comments in a personal message.

The crash occured (spoiler ahead!)...

when I encountered an enemy who petrified one of my party members.

At first glance, it appears to be an easy problem
to fix.

The "UafErr_Engine.txt" will be of no value.
A recording of the failure would be helpful.
I can try to fix it in 'dead reckoning' mode
and post a new version of UAFWin if that is
what you and Manikus would like.

I'm not sure what causes the engine to crash sometimes. You can PM me your comments.

I guess recording means the record*.log file? I attach it.

EDIT: I just reached the end of the design (this time without a crash). It is by all means very original and worth playing. I like the combat art very much, too!

re: the crash: UAFWin? I apologize for not having been able to play this design yet (I have even borrowed a copy of the Big Lebowski to watch) so I have not noticed if this is post 1.0 or not. UAFWin implies it is not. Is this correct? Or was that used because of the error log name (which have not changed)? If the enine is pre-1.0301 I don't think we should fix it. (If it is 1.03, then we should see if using 1.0301 fixes it and if not and Paul agrees, we should consider the issue as having been with 1.0301).
I suspect based upon Nol's interest in DC that this is the latest engine, but I have to ask. :) As such, we want to fix this crash - both because we want to fix all crashes of the latest engine and because we want to keep Nol interested in DC, and every0one else.

(I have even borrowed a copy of the Big Lebowski to watch)

This design really raised my interest into the film. I could have watched it on German TV earlier, but was told I have to see it in English first. At least  I could understand the references to the song (which are integrated in a great way!).

Nol, are you going to change anything on this design? As I wrote to you, I guess it is already good as it is, but maybe you consider improving it to make it even better? I ask because I would write a short review once you consider the design completed.
