AD&D Second Edition Monsters
« on: August 24, 2013, 02:34:45 PM »
What Second Edition monsters, not represented in 1e or at least not in the DC monster database, do people think need to be in a 2e set for DC?

So, nobody thinks that any mosnters should be added to the monsters database? Fine with me. I can not add any very easily. ;)

I looked through the 2E Monstrous Manual and didn't find many monsters that weren't in the 1E MM, FF, or MM2. That's one vote for not adding anything...

Fair enough. :) Are there any that you think should have been included but weren't? (in the DC database I mean) Perhaps my initial question should be reworded. I mean new to DC and not (necessarily) new to 2e. ;)

There are quite a few monsters that I would like to see added to the DC database.  As a starting point, I assumed that there will not be any extra-planar creatures (such as Demons, Devils, and Slaad) other than Wizard's familiars. I also assumed that designers would have limited need for creatures of good alignment, so no Blink Dogs, Ki-Rin, or Shedu. I also eliminated any monsters that are usually found in aquatic environments. I gave top priority to monsters that are A) in default FRUA and/or B) in the 1977 Monster Manual. I also deleted some monsters that I have never seen used in a design (Catoblepas, for example). Here's what I came up with:

#### List of 1E AD&D Monsters that aren't in DC, but should be: ####

-A-
%Ankheg
%Ant, Giant
%Ape, Carnivorous

-B-
%Beetle (Bombardier, Fire)

-C-
%Chimera
%Crab, Giant

-D-
%Doppleganger
*Dracolisk
*Drider

-G-
%Gas Spore
%Ghost
*Gorgon
%Gray Ooze
%Groaning Spirit (Banshee)

-H-
%Harpy
%Homonculous
%Hyaenodon (Giant Hyena)
*Hydra
%Hydra, Pyrohydra

-J-
%Jackalwere

-L-
%Leucrotta
%Lizard (Giant, Minotaur)

-M-
%Manticore
%Mimic

-N-
%Naga, Spirit
%Nightmare

-0-
%Octopus, Giant
%Ochre Jelly

-P-
*Phase Spider

-Q-
%Quasit

-R-
*Rakshasa
%Roc
%Roper
%Rust Monster

-S-
*Salamander
%Sea Hag
%Snake, Amphisbaena
*Spectre

-T-
%Tick, Giant

-W-
%Wasp, Giant
%Water Weird
%Will-o-wisp

* = Default FRUA Monsters that are not in DC
% = Monsters that are in the Monster Manual but not in DC

#### End of List ####

Thanks, Nol. :) Almost noe of these were on my list of things to check out - that is a good thing.

Tom and I will be creating a DC database set of "vanilla FRUA" for use with importing or converting designs from FRUA to DC. So, I can guarantee that all of teh FRUA default monsters will be done, though in a 1e version, which means it wil be super easy for me to make a 2e version. :D This applies to spells and items as well.

Great list, Nol. Of those, I would vote to prioritise:

% Ankheg
% Ant, Giant
% Bombardier Beetle
% Fire Beetle
% Chimera
* Dracolisk
* Drider
% Gas Spore
% Ghost
* Gorgon
% Groaning Spirit (Banshee) - but I would call it "Banshee"
% Harpy
* Hydra (various numbers of heads - eg 5-Headed Hydra, 8-Headed Hydra)
% Pyrohydra (various numbers of heads, as above)
% Lizard (Giant, Minotaur) - I wonder whether the "Minotaur Lizard" started off as a misunderstanding of "Monitor Lizard"...
% Nightmare
%Octopus, Giant (Uatu already has a couple of excellent icons)
*Phase Spider
*Rakshasa
%Roc
*Salamander
*Spectre
%Wasp, Giant
%Water Weird

I would also add:
% Rhinoceros Beetle
% Stag Beetle
Death Knight
% Bronze Dragon
% Cryohydra
% Hippogriff
Revenant
% Rhea (flightless bird)
Skeleton Warrior
% Sphynx

i don't know where I found it, but I managed to download a massive collection of 2nd edition monsters saved in html and indexed by world (greyhawk, ravenloft, FR, etc). I can zip it up and send to you if you want. I am 99.99 percent sure that it has every monsters stats that you would want. I can send to you this weekend if you want.

I found these resources - I think they are just the Monstrous Manual, which has pretty much everything for 2e.

http://www.dotd.com/mm/
http://www.dotd.com/mm/

I think they both have pretty much the same thing, the first one is the same formatting as the Monstrous Manual pdf I have, which is locked so I can't edit the bookamrks...

yep, rainbower that's it. Yesterday the page was having technical difficulties (?), was down or something but its back up. I ended up finding this gem a while back and it is ridiculous just how much is available. There are creatures from forgotten realms, greyhawk, dragonlance, even mystara (the basic dnd boxsets)

Nice list of monsters :D

Some of them I have icons for already (and would love for them to be in the databases of course!).  Others I will probably do some more of soon...
