Probably it would be easiest to avoid any negatives at all (so as to avoid having to mod the code, which does seem messy/difficult).

So how about:

War Fan -> Tieshan (0)
Lajatang -> Spade (+3) or Chan (+4)
Wakizashi -> Shuanggou (0)
Daikyu -> Dagong (0)
Nunchaku -> Chui (+4) ...although I would disagree with this exchange, since nunchaku are fast striking weapons, while chui are very heavy

That still leaves us with Bo, Shuriken, Sling still...

If Nol is willing, and believes the name changes can work, so long as we're under the original sum total lengths, I'd rather try it that way, first.  (I'd particularly be sad to lose Pellet Bow and Staff.)

In exchanging Nunchaku for Melon Hammer (or Chui), I don't think UA weapons reflect effects to speed or initiative, do they?  I thought Melon Hammer might be a good choice for replacing Nunchaku as they are both blunt weapons and the Hammers could then be used in pairs (one in each hand), IIRC in OAUA.  (Melon Hammers are usually used in pairs by practioners.)

I figure that maybe some players might miss the Nunchaku, but they were pretty rare to Chinese martial arts until Bruce Lee's modern-day movies of the 70's.

I am willing and I do believe so.

With confidence that we'll have a Chinese-ier OAUA Ckit hack at some point, I've begun work on a Cbody replacement.

In my own (non-comprehensive) kung fu experience :D it does seem that chui tend to be used in pairs, but I am not sure I can say the same for nunchaku (in my style, they are used solo, for example; actually, I can't think of any other kung fu schools that have it...).

From the OAUA docs:

DUAL-WEAPON COMBAT

Dual-classing may not be available, but dual-weapon combat is.  Your character now has the option of wielding a weapon in each hand, as long as the off-hand weapon weighs 30 tael or less.  For purposes of combat in the UA engine, the number of damage dice set in the left-hand weapon will be added to the number of damage dice used by the right-hand weapon and the left-hand damage bonus will be added to the right-hand damage bonus.  In other words, a left-hand weapon lets you pack quite a wallop.  It should be noted that a left-hand weapon with a magical bonus will not be recognized as a magic weapon when attacking monsters with weapon immunities -- you'll want to keep the weapons with the strongest enchantments in the right hand.

One trick to be known about dual-wielding weapons: you may need to 'reset' your weapon configuration now and then or you could end up with the light-weight dagger as your primary weapon and the +3 katana as your off-hand weapon.  It is recommended that when switching to a new primary weapon you 'unready' both hands, then 'ready' them again with the primary / right-hand weapon first, secondary / left-hand weapon last.

In OAUA, Nunchaku are one of the weapons that can be used in the left hand.  So, a player could use two Nunchaku at once in the game.

Bruce Lee did this in the classic alley fight from Return/Way of the Dragon:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvCHcR6vWF0

By changing Nunchaku for Melon Hammers in the Chinese-ier hack, it will allow players to use the two Chui at once.  Hook Swords, which are also typically dual weapons can function the same.

Unfortunately, my replacement for Parang, the Emeici (Piercers) may be too heavy to work that way.   >:(

Return/Way of the Dragon was my favorite Bruce Lee flick.  :D  The terrible dubbing only added to the fun...

Double weapons in Chinese martial arts tend to be same size in each hand, contradicting AD&D a bit, but they tend to be small-to-medium in size (I guess the hook swords, straight swords, sabers, and such are fairly long; double crutches are pretty long, too).

Are two weapons usable in FRUA (and the OA hack)?  I don't remember them working in the old Gold Box games...  (Now I am wondering about DC, too :D )

Oops, I should've said "OAUA" above, instead of just OA (which sounds like I might be talking about the PnP version).  I've corrected that with a late edit.

Two weapons are only usable in the OAUA hack, AFAIK.  A cheat could be done in UA by making a two-handed weapon, giving it extra damage, and calling it something like "twin axes" or such.

Maybe the originators of TSR's OA might've had in mind Miyamoto Musashi's (legendary, but historically dubious) technique of using a Katana and Wakizashi simultaneously in combat.

Ah - well, it would be a good function to have in DC :D

Strange that Miyamoto Musashi doesn't seem to have used two swords simultaneously in history, yet the sword style attributed to him (said to descend from him), Niten'ichi-ryu, practices the two swords :D

Two swords at once - not an easy task, but cool if you can do it!

Yes he did :) he invented that fighting style although he advised to be only used agains more opponents as that style is not so precise, but he used katana only when dueling and wel other weapons i guess as it seems he like to experiment with it :) Drizzt somehow reminds me of this samurai style fighting as I see him with his 2 blades.

I'm thinking about switching (13) Sai's replacement Cha (trident/fork) with (29) Parang's replacement Emeici (Piercer).  My reason is that 29's weight is 50, while 13's is only 20.  The Emeici is a very light weapon, whereas a Cha can refer to tridents or forks of various sizes.

It's not perfect, I know, but I think it may be the best compromise seeing as how we're limited to just renames.   :-\

Alternatively, I could keep Cha (13), as it is, and just replace (29) Parang with a heavier blade or sharp weapon.  Although I think it would be neat to have the Emeici fill a weapon slot of their own, they could passably be covered under the general term "Dagger."   ???
