Gold Box Art
« on: May 21, 2012, 03:03:41 PM »
If anyone can point me in the direction of some artwork that is similar to the original "Gold Box" style of artwork, let me know.

Also, while browsing the known art archives, I'm noticing some things missing.  Now, I'm probably blind, but I can't seem to find any collections of artwork for the following games:  "Pools of Darkness," "Death Knights of Krynn," and "Secret of the Silver Blades."  Has anyone actually done captures and conversions of these games?

I found these:

POD combat icons

POD title screen

This file contains some art from DKK.

I think you can also extract art directly from the games with the VIEW program.

I could check my pic archive for more GoldBox art, if you need more. Somewhere in the art section of this forum there must be some newly converted GoldBox walls as well.

I also just found out that the Cohub gallery has been updated for the first time in years!  :o

I've got all this stuff.  What I'm looking for is complete sets of art taken from these games.  I think having it all in one place instead of scattered around would be really helpful.  The way things were done in the old days was kind of weird.

That sounds like a great collective project for the FRUA forum. ;)

I checked my GoldBox-Art folder, and there is a lot of stuff in it, but most of it scattered about, as you described.

However, I found what looks like complete collections of PoD pics and sprites:

Thanks for that.  Though, looking through it, I'm beginning to see why "Pools of Darkness" doesn't exist in collections, since most of this artwork is in UA by default.  Didn't realize that (it's probably something I knew almost 20 years ago, but those memories are hazy now).

Anyway, still looking for other artwork in the same style, though.  So, if you have anymore, or if anyone else does, let me know.

Here are the combat icons for Secret of the Silver Blades:

Or, are you looking for the original 16-color versions?

I'm not seeking the 16-color versions, but thanks for asking.  This zip file seems to be empty, though.  Is anyone able to see anything inside it?

Luckily, I have a copy of the file on this computer and re-uploaded it to rosedragon.

It should be fixed within a few days, or whenever Donnie has some free time to update the archive.

Ah, so it must be broken then.  I guess I'll wait for it to show up there, then.  Thanks for pointing me to the file.

Thanks Donnie!

This link is no longer broken:

http://frua.rosedragon.org/pc/art/s/ssb.zip

I like the idea of having all the artwork from each goldbox game available in a single file. This project could be made easier by using Gold Box Explorer.

I imagine a file called "DKK Complete Edition" (for example) with all the music, fonts, frames, big pics, small pics, sprites, combat icons, walls, dungcoms, and wildcoms in a single download ready to be plugged into Unlimited Adventures.

I'm putting all the art from NWN-Online into one folder.  ;)

But using GoldBoxExplorer isn't an exact science to get the correct images. Comparing GBE captures with screen captures has shown certain colors not to show up. More so in wallsets. I've been using the wallset images to clean up my screen captures of wallsets.

EXAMPLE (NWN-O is left, GBE is right):

What I notice first is:

NWN-O (left image) uses 16 colors

GBE (right image) uses 164 colors

So we might be talking EGA vs VGA, here.
