Title: One-Week-Design: Helmetlands: The Ambassador's Letter
Post by: Dinonykos on March 04, 2017, 04:33:01 AM
I started today with working on my first design for the one-week challenge in the editor (as posted in another thread, I already made some new art and wrote most of text during the past weeks).

In case I really manage to finish this one until March 10th, I might try to do a second one-week-design from March 11th to March 17th (even if this would be too late for the challenge). In any case a I like the idea of the challenge!

No such thing as "too late for the challenge."  Take the challenge whenever you want.  If you get something done, you've completed the challenge.

In fact, I may say something similar in the other thread.

While I think I make good progress, I am still behind my plans concerning event organization. I think I can finish the main level design today, though (excluding events).

All right. I think that then I will do two "one-week designs".

Looks good, Dinonykos. :D

I am now thinking of this challenge as something to do to gain XP points as a designer. ;) Or perhaps like a medal that can go on your designer uniform. I am not mocking - once I get some time, I want to attempt a one week challenge, and being able to pick when that week is, is a good thing. :D

I already gained some XP, to use your metaphor, since it is an interesting approach to prepare almost everything before starting to work with the editor.
I have not, until today, thought about composing new music, but I had a good idea today for the title/main character music.

I will probably have to interrupt working on this for one or two days due to a lot of work, but I made quite good progress today so that I think I might be able to finish this design during the coming weekend.

The "Flow Control" event is really a great tool, by the way! Thanks again for adding it!  ;D

A week of seven non-consecutie days, sounds like an even better idea to me than a "traditional" one week challenge. Like maybe I could do this over three and a half weekends. :D

I am also really like the Flow Control event and am using it quite extensively to set up a "Superhero Making Market" for the Hero Craft project.

By the way, I love that spaceship of yours. It is reminiscent of classic sci-fi ships. A very nice look, in my opinion.

I will try to finish this on Saturday (on the 8th day), but I guess the "seven non-consecutive" approach is still within the spirit ProphetSword wanted to summon. :D

You probably have an extensive event tree for character creation and the Flow Control event helps hopping from one branch to the next? I would really like to see and test that (I remember you asked for playtesters in the related thread), though I may probably not be the most competent tester when it comes to superheroes.

I use the Flow Control event extensively in "The Ambassador's Letter" for a different mode of combat with (modified) ideas from Star Trek and Monkey Island...
As written elsewhere, it will surely also be an excellent help for creating simple mini games.

That's good to know - this is one of my first big pictures I did for DC and without the pressure of the One-Week-Challenge, I would probably have drawn a new one. ;) Indeed, I use several old images this time which would otherwise probably never have been used in a design.

As I suspected, I found no time for working with DC today, but I made some more screenshots to show what the design will look like...

I have only used Flow Control on some of my event trees. I had already done an extensive amount without Flow Control because I did it before Flow Control was implemented. :)

I am nowhere close to being ready for playtesters. I will take a one week challenge to do the event tree for character creation for the Hero Craft project. I am going to redo the whole darn thing...

And if youu ever feel inspired to do more spaceships, please share. :D

I also have no time today to work on the design... I hope it will be better tomorrow.

Below is a screenshot from a typical combat in "The Ambassador's Letter"... The main thing I have to do during the remaining days is add more of these combats...

That looks cool. :D :D :D I have thought about doing a scripted combat, that starts with sprites, but then depending upon choices made by the player shows the icons on my own combat screens. As with many things in DC that I want to do, it is after seeing something you have done, Dinonykos. :)

I have just tested one of the event chains with FlowControl, and to test all options, I hopped back and forward between events, then the error below occurred.
I could still continue playing, but the message came continuously, and finally the engine crashed.

Maybe you (Paul/Manikus/...) can analyze this based on the part of the error log I posted above. My design is already quite big, but if you need a "mini"-mod, I can upload it after removing graphics and sounds not needed in this special case.

EDIT: I tested another event tree and the same error message occurred after I jumped between events inside the trees numerous times. It seems to me that it always happens after a certain amount of "jumps".

(It is no problem for my design, since I do not expect players to "loop around" several dozen times...)

This should not happen if you use 'Go to Marker'
(as opposed to 'Call Marker').

I looked into this a bit.  I cannot figure out
how it is supposed to work, much less how
it fails.  I think the whole feature needs some
further testing.

If you are using 'Call Marker' then you deserve
an error message.  If you are using 'Go To Marker'
then I have to fix it.

I have made two example screenshots of what I am doing: I set Entry Markers (e.g. "ComHLGiE0") and use Destination Action: Go to Marker to get to these Markers inside the same event chain.
As written above, it works fine as long as the player does not jump too often between the markers.

Dinonykos, could you please make a mini-mod that shows this error? It will help.

Indeed, this should not cause a problem.  A mini-mod
would allow me to fix this, I am rather sure.

Did you find the uploaded version in the post above, Paul and Manikus? I just saw it was not yet downloaded...

Concerning the challenge: I used 6 days so far, I will try to finish this on Friday or Saturday, but I guess I will need two additional days instead of one, as mentioned in the other thread. The combat system needs quite a lot of testing, even with the great FlowControl event...

I should perhaps have started with a "one-month challenge". :D

kept me a bit busy.

I am patience in person - I only realized that my post with the uploaded design was quite unspecific and that it would not be visible that I uploaded s.th. without logging in.
Thus I mentioned it...  ;)

As I wrote, I will find no time anyway during the coming days for continuing with the design, and the problem is rather minor. I can only expres again how thankful I am that you put so much effort in DC at all!

I hope you could keep the disasters under control!

Try engine version 2.79.

Dinoykos you've done more than I have done with the 1 week challenge. I did not start mine. I had a few real life issues which impacted me (due to budget, been workin extra shifts, but dad in the hospital was the major one) but I am going to see if I cannot get something done in a week. Will set an official start date here shortly.

ST

ps -- the "rules" were more of a guideline that is supposed to challenge yourself than a full fledged contest. The "winners" are the players who got a surge of mods created

Try engine version 2.79.

Great, thank you, I will test it tonight. Apart from testing, I will hopefully find time to complete this design during the weekend.

It works fine concerning the combat, Paul, but something else went wrong:
The Screenshots below are both from the same position in game, 6a is from version 239, 6b is from version 279. There is a graphic error in the center of the 3d viewport. I could imagine it has something to do with the changes you made concerning wall handling between 239 and 279..

I do not yet understand why the graphic error occurs at that spot...

EDIT: I found additional graphic errors for other walls, but it seems that in all cases only the most distant walls are not working perfectly.
Title: Re: One-Week-Design: Helmetlands: The Ambassador's Letter
Post by: Paul R. Stevens on March 17, 2017, 03:37:23 PM
That problem is undoubtedly due to the changes
I made to allow multiple graphic formats for a single
wall location.  It could very well be that I missed
one or more pieces of code that needed to be
updated.

I suspect user error.  Something to do with the
specification of wall formats in 'config.txt'.  I am
rather ignorant of this mechanism.  I bet Manikus
can tell us right off the top of his head what is wrong.

Well, the seventh day has come and I fear that I will really need another. One reason for that is that I am already playtesting a lot, but this is necessary to make sure that the insult-based combat works acceptable.
Title: Re: One-Week-Design: Helmetlands: The Ambassador's Letter
Post by: manikus on March 18, 2017, 02:11:48 PM
Sorry to disappoint, but I have no idea what the graphic glitch may be. This is a new one for me.

Assuming that the same wall and same config format are in use, it must be an engine thing. My first thought, based on nothing other than it was the first thing to pop into my head was that it might have something to do with 5 distant walls versus 7 distant walls, but only a guess.
Title: Re: One-Week-Design: Helmetlands: The Ambassador's Letter
Post by: Dinonykos on March 18, 2017, 02:25:34 PM
Well, it looks like the upper left 16x19 pixel of Slot A are depicted instead of Slot P, but only for a few walls. I will check if I can find a pattern (it seems like only a few wall slots are affected, while others work). As you implied, I did not change anything in the config file or concerning my walls and only use one wall format.

By the way, I just managed to finish the design - so I did it within 7 days. BUT I am sure that there are quite a lot bugs around and I am also not sure if the Flow Control event really works or if I made some minor mistakes. I will check that during the coming days.

Congratulations!

I want to be kept abreast of this graphics issue, if you don't mind. :)
Are the images all the same dimensions?
Are the occassions where the error is concerning similar in that they are all for walls in the same slot, as in base, door or overlay? If so, is it a case where they are always in a slot where at least one other slot is being used, i.e. all are walls with overlays, etc.

Congratulations!

I want to be kept abreast of this graphics issue, if you don't mind. :)
Certainly. I only thought it was worth mentioning that I made it somehow...  ;)

I have not yet found a pattern.
I found so far that walls in slots 2, 14, 15, 17, 21, 23, 29, 45, 63 all have problems when the most distant wall is depicted, but maybe this is only accidental - my guess is that it has something to do with how the most distant walls are displayed together with neighbouring walls (maybe a 5 vs 7 most distant walls problem?). It seems that doors in the same slots are not affected.
Sometimes the most distant wall in the center of the 3D view is affected, but for some slots the wall is displayed correctly in the center of the 3D view, but not on the left side.

Interestingly, sometimes it seems the upper left 16x19 pixel of Slot A is shown instead of the correct slot as I wrote below, but sometimes I also see just magenta coloured walls (indicating that the frames of the wall files are shown).
As far as I can tell I use only walls of type 5.

I would be interested to know if you have similar issues in your designs when using the same engine version...

While it may be unwise to mention another issue in the same thread: Is the config file read automatically? I ask because I changed the custom text colour in the config.txt file inside the design folder, but it does not seem to have an effect.

Quote
Is the config file read automatically

Yes.  And it must be in the 'Data' sub-folder.  The engine
will complain if it is not found.

An easy way to see if your file is being found is to rename
it to something else and see if the engine complains of
its absence.

Thanks Paul! I made another mistake (confusing red/green/blue values with hue/saturation/luminance values  ::)  :-[ ), but I did not find it before being sure that the config file was indeed read.

I noted an extra 'w' in the 'rise' page:

In fact, the entire word would best be left out.

Homepage updated...

Manikus, you can find the design here:
http://dhost.info/dinonykos/pageambl.html

I moved the starting location to a level where you can see most of the graphic errors I found.

Just in case you wanted to start the game from the beginning, you would have to move the starting point to Level 50, Square 18,14 - but then you would have to go through a long introduction... :D
Title: Re: One-Week-Design: Helmetlands: The Ambassador's Letter
Post by: manikus on March 21, 2017, 04:53:44 PM
I've downloaded it and will take a look tonight. :) Hopefully I can spot something, even if it is just a method to the madness.

In my Hovos design, there is a cell on one fo the levels that has a weird rgraphics glitch. I've tried everything to get rid ot it, everything short of deleting the level and starting over. It doesn't matter what walls I use, I get an error, but just int he one cell. I think it might be related to weirdness in the level dat file since this design start in version .914 and has been updated many times... Let's hope we are not seeing another one of those.
Title: Re: One-Week-Design: Helmetlands: The Ambassador's Letter
Post by: Dinonykos on March 22, 2017, 01:22:51 AM
Well, I imported one level from a 0.914 design (level 49/50, Helmettiger Palace), but the other one (40) is original. I did not import the design.
The errors are occurring on all levels, but in level 49/50 you rarely see them since the rooms are not long/deep enough (meaning, the most distant walls are rarely shown).

But, as written above, this occurs only in the newest DC version. I started the design with an older DC version (2.39) several times, and the errors are not occurring.

I fiidled around with this for an hour or so last night. Nothing wrong in the config.txt. Nothing wrong with the graphics files. So, its got to be the engine.

Tonight I will try and recreate this in a new design. If successful, that will be my mini-mod to Paul. If not successful, I will do a walk-through of your design and make that the mini-mod for Paul.
Title: Re: One-Week-Design: Helmetlands: The Ambassador's Letter

I started my other design in progress ("Friedrich's Fastnacht") with version 279 and had the same issues, but also with different walls. I conclude it is not design specific. What I cannot test that easily is if it may be tied to my wall format - but as written, I use the same wall format for all walls.

I just tested "Stolen Masterpiece" with 279, and though this uses totally different art (but the same wall format), I found the same issues. What I have not yet found out is why the same wall can be displayed correctly sometimes, and sometimes not. I assume it has something to do with the neighbouring walls.

That is exactly as i expected. I just wanted to verify that it wasn't the quik of one particular design (though, we would still want to try and fix that, too).

I'm going to work on this tonight and have something for Paul tomorrow.

I tried this in a 10x10 level mini-mod and it didn't occur. It oculd be the size of the level, it could be my particular layout. I will keep trying.

Since my previous post, I have created a 10x10 mini-mod. So not only are we getting that particular problem, but I can show a spot where there should be a far wall but there is nothing.

I will send this to Paul as soon as we resolve the current issue.

My guess is that the not-occurring walls are part of the same problem, only that transparent parts of the wall templates are displayed.

That's what I was thinking, too. In fact, if I had to guess, I would say that the engine is appying the offset for placement to the graphic first in some cases and looking at the wrong slot for others. But, I am sure that I am just guessing. :D
