Title: PREVIEW: Neverwhere
Post by: DrkStarr on May 18, 2016, 12:42:17 PM
I finally finished my FRUA module after working on it for about 15 years.  On and off, more off than on.

I've played through it multiple times, and can find no bugs, but I'd like a few people to try it out before it's released.

I don't see a lot of calls for Beta Testers on these boards, but if anybody is interested please let me know.

Module Info:
Description: Told about a town not on any of the maps, the party finds themselves trapped in a city by a spell put upon the south gate. A city that speaks in a strange language and is home to unusual people.

The game consists of a city, graveyard, sewers, and a 4 level deep dungeon.
Played out across 18 dungeons and no overland maps.
Average Playtime: 7-10 hours

Here are some screenshots if you're interested:

I will send you a personal message with my email address.  I'm not sure which one is tied to the account here (though I will be checking it); because I didn't receive a message from you.

Congratulations on getting to this point of completion. Would you consider this adventure Ravenloft inspired? It seems like it might have themes of horror and survival.

Thanks a lot guys, I hope you get a chance to play it when it comes out.

I can't say the game is inspired by Ravenloft.  I hate to admit I haven't played it yet, and only read parts of the module.

But it's definitely an Undead themed mod.  Though I drew on some different lore to create this.

I just don't know if the theme makes it a Horror module or not.  I kind of labeled it Fantasy because it's AD&D.

Oh yeah, it's not survival.  It's six characters storming in and kicking some arse.  But the undead can be ruff at times.

I've been testing it (still got some testing to do), and so far I'd say it's a really good module.  Combats are challenging without being unfair (have had two party wipe outs so far, but that just means that I need to try harder).

I think the community as a whole will enjoy it.

Finished the module and sent off my final suggestions.  Really good hack-and-slash module that takes me back to my dungeon-delving days of AD&D.  Once it's released, it'll be worth a spin by FRUA players.

Neverwhere is now available at the FRUA Archive.

It can be tricky in some parts.  If you have any questions just ask.

I have installed it and it looks fantastic, only thing that was bad is that today was very hot and module has wintery atmosphere :icon_sunny:, but good thing is that there were already made characters to be played :). I have played a bit today but will leave the rest for tomorrow.

Love the art and music! Fantastic. Playing with the Lev 3 party you provided. I assume, for a challenge, create your own Lev 1 party (and do the suggestions you provided)?

Very nice!

I playtested with a 1st level party.  I can promise you, you will be challenged if you start out that way!  But, some of us like it that way...and it is survivable if you're careful.

Yeah, the module was test with a level 1 party up until Beta.  But I know where everything is, and there's stuff to put that game in easy mode.  So if you find most the stuff you can get through with a level 1 party.  It also helps to know where to go.  A wrong turn can kill all of them.

Enjoy - D

Yeah, I lost track of the number of TPKs that befell the party.  Do the wrong thing or turn down the wrong hallway...and it's all over!

Not a critique.  As I said, some people like that kind of challenge, and I appreciate a module that makes me sweat and puts the tactical combat engine to work.

One question, though:  Was the issue with Turn Undead resolved?

Yeah, most of the undead can be turned.  Especially with a level 3 party, a lot harder with a level 1.  A few fights I made impossible, but those are mainly the boss and mini-bosses.

Thanks for the input ProphetSword  ;D

It is very good indeed, I just wish I could make this kind of simple yet interesting adventures :D. I am running it with provided 3rd lv party and I really like how icons look like. It seems now to be better to play this module during night instead of day :) so I will try finish and post review as soon as I do it. I might do it once again sometimes later with Lv 1 party.

There is a Girdle that you will find, but after you ID it, it doesn't seem to be working (as the item is supposed to)?

I placed it on a character with 15 STR and nothing happened when they equipped it.

This is a bug.  I tested it out against Vanilla.  Giants have changed because of the way undead are handled.  Sorry about that.  I'll have to replace it.  At least the other artifacts in game work.  Maybe you can sell it if you need some gold.

Fantastic game, much better when played by night. Things that I am missing is two handed sword and trouble is I can't get restoration because it costs 3000gps and my characters can carry a bit more then 1000gps. I hoped I would finish it this evening but it seems it is a bit longer yet very good, rarely I enjoyed adventure with so much undead :D

I hate to see that you died.  I know I've appraised stuff at the temple to raise the money they want.  I've raised 4500gps before when it was even higher.  But there is another way to get around healing if you want to.

And a character death could be a perma-death in an undead module.  I don't know how you died, or how the game will treat it.  I've seen it do some nasty things to people that die.

I also think that there are 2 two-handed swords, you just might have to go a little deeper.

- Good luck :)

Thank You, my ranger and thief both lost levels, and I can't restore them to previous state because they can't carry each 3000 gps in the healing temple. I have been playing for some time but never ecountered such a thing :).
Title: Re: PREVIEW: Neverwhere
Post by: ProphetSword on June 02, 2016, 03:12:22 PM
Have you tried using the "Pool" option to combine the party's money together?  If six people are carrying 1,000 gold each, that's 6,000 gold.
Title: Re: PREVIEW: Neverwhere
Post by: Milos Gulan on June 03, 2016, 12:27:31 AM
Yes I did but I can't pick up 3000 gps from the pooled funds because the character I need to restore can't carry that much, and temple price is 3000. I don't know how to restore those 2 character to previous level, it seems like a bug.
Title: Re: PREVIEW: Neverwhere
Post by: DrkStarr on June 03, 2016, 12:49:41 AM
You should be able to share 3000 gps across the party, then go to the temple and pool it for your character.  If you can't share 3000 gps because of weight, there is a bank.

Also there's another way to handle healing in the game.

Ok I have made it finaly, my mistake as usual. I have pooled GPs and then healed character, GPs were not needed to be in the character inventory.

Great, I will continue my exploring now :)

Also, FRUA doesn't limit you from carrying that much coin (or more) when you use the "Share" function. It will be more than happy to encumber you.

I don't know how to use that function:)

I am hoping that I can learn it  :D

And finaly finsihed this adventure, this is one is really great. Just amazing. I better write a review.

Whenever money is present for the party to pick up (either because you used "Pool" to pool it together or you found it in a treasure pile), you can use the "Share" button.  The "Share" button equally divides the money among your party members and distributes it to them.

Example:
If you find 3000 platinum and have six party members, when you "Share," each member will receive 500 platinum pieces.

EDIT:
Have you never played any of the Gold-Box games?  Do you have access to any of the manuals for those games or the one for FRUA?  It explains a great deal about how things work.

I just finished this module, and truly enjoyed it.  The variations in imagery and layout were really nice.  I hope you are planning a sequel, or another mod, because this was really, really enjoyable.  Well done.
