Hero Craft: Which heroes and villains?
« on: September 01, 2016, 06:05:05 PM »
Who are the must include heroes and villains for Hero Craft? List as many as you think are necessary. Think about who you want to actually see in a design. :)

It would be  exeedingly helpful to me if you divided up your list by publisher or network or production company. :)

Thank you, Nol. :D I would say that this is a great starting place, but I don't want to sell your lists short. I am going to use your list as the basis for who will be in the Hero Craft ranks. There are some denizens of the list that may prove to be problematic when it comes to implementing them properly, but I will give it a try and ask for lots of help. ;)

Edited to add:

Listed above are 75 characters. What is a good number for the release? (More can always be added later.)

In this context, maybe one should also ask who is going to use these characters, and how soon? I see the risk that you, Manikus, spend hours into implementing all these characters into DC, and in the end, only a few of them are used.

Of course, a good side aspect of making some of these characters is that you can test if certain special-ability-related things work well in DC, and probably it is also just fun for you to make them. But I would definitely not try to build that many characters!

Maybe you could base you selection for the first, let's say, 10-20 characters on:
Which characters will be used in designs in the near future?
Which characters have characteristics that may also be interesting as examples for modules which are not based on existing comics?

Maybe designers can already tell now if they intend to do something superhero-related during 2016/2017. My guess is that several people interested in superhero modules will stick to FRUA. There are probably only very few like Nol Drek or yourself who really are going to use DC for superhero mods, and a few like me who do something like superhero-fantasy mixtures.

I personally would be interested in the following characteristics because I want to use them in my next design after "Hide & Seek":
Regeneration (thus, I'd vote for Wolverine)
Cyborg abilities (particularly seeing infrared, ultraviolet; e.g. Cyborg)
Freezing abilities (e.g. Iceman)
A character able to put off and on a complete suit with superpowers (e.g. Ironman)
Character with dangerous symbionts (Venom/Carnage)
A character with wings (e.g. Hawkgirl)
Maybe also a character morphing either into another creature or just his/her body (Hulk/Mr Fantastic)

PS: I just for the first time realized that "DC" (comics) and "DC" (Dungeon Craft) can lead to confusions... :)

Creating say, 100 characters is a huge task if you are coming at it on a character by character bases. But I'm not. :) I'm creating the basis for people to make their own characters. When I get that done, it's really just going to a list and seeing that character XYZ has 1, 2, 7, 12 and 39 and attaching those to the character which is created in the NPC editor. A lot of work for sure, but by that point I'm not making the super powers, just assigning them.
With that being said, I have not plans to make all of the Marvel and DC characters. That is something like 2,000 characters. I am looking at a base of 25 to 30 (or maybe 35) for each of the categories: DC Heroes, DC Villains, Marvel Heroes, Marvel Villains.
By far the biggest obstacle that I am facing are combat icons and a serious lack of them. :) I will be converting everything ever made for SHUA (well, the DC and Marvel icons) so that there will be something, but one of the reasons I moved to Dungeon Craft was for higher resolution art... Don't get me wrong, Uatu and Nol Drek have provided some creat icons and I have done a few myself, so we have like 20 down and a whole heckuva lot to go.

Does "public domain" in this context mean that there would be no copyright issues if one made games with these characters?

I am aware that it is also quite improbable to get problems when using, e.g., Marvel characters, as long as no money is made, but still, using "public domain" characters may be a good idea.

Thank you everybody for the lists. I have created a master list for my own use, of all of the smaller presses. You guys are a great resource. :) I do plan on adding a couple of non-Big Two characters. I am just trying to make characters that have a likelihood of being used by some as-yet-unknown designer. Those of us having the discussion are capable of adding our own favorites. ;) And before I forget, Dinonykos, you will be able to change the names of everything to fit your own design.

Here is the list I am tentatively working from, but can go up to 30 or 35 for DC/Marvel. Give me any feedback you care too, especially who I am missing that I must include.

I might add five more to each of the numbered lists, or maybe just to the villains.
I do plan on doing a whole bunch more characters, but as add-ons, at my leisure after it is all done. For example, I really like some of the WildC.A.T.s characters, but they're not popular enough to include in the general release. Same goes for Powers (Christian Walker, Zora, Olympia, etc), personal faves left off the list, but will be done in an add-on later.

The hardest part is still going to be getting the icons. :D I plan on converting many game sprites for use as icons, so I have most of the Marvel characters covered. Not near as many of that kind of resrouce for DC, so that will be a longer slog.

Does "public domain" in this context mean that there would be no copyright issues if one made games with these characters?

Characters who have fallen into the "public domain" have no copyright issues. Most characters published before 1950 would have needed their copyrights renewed a long time ago.
