Can't Play a Game
« on: September 04, 2013, 07:45:40 PM »
Hello!

Please forgive my naivete, but I use computers the way I drive my car...I turn my key and it goes.  And if I turn my key and it doesn't go, I start wringing my hands and wondering who I need to call to fix it.  I'm just not that savvy.  It's part of the reason I've made fifty games for FRUA, one for NWN, and none for NWN2, I guess...  :-[

I downloaded the Iceblink Engine--and I love the way it looks!

I made a character, and everything looks great.  When I click "Start Game with This Character in Party," the screen changes as if it's going to start something big.  Five icons appear on the left hand side of the screen, and a gray box appears in the middle of a large wood-grain frame.

Then a pop-up window appears that reads:

Quote
Microsoft .NET Framework
Unhandled exception has occurred in your application.  If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.  If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

Unable to load DLL 'd3dx9_43.dll': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x7007E).

When I click details, I get this:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

When I click continue, the error message goes away, but nothing else happens.  It just sort of sits there...

Iceblink looks AWESOME--Can anyone help me make it work?

I'm running a Toshiba laptop with Windows 8.  I'm not sure what else I could provide to assist, but I'm happy to work with anyone who knows how to read those error messages!

Just a cursory glance makes me think you don't have DirectX installed (or at least the correct version needed).  You might try reinstalling it.  In particular, it looks like Windows can't locate the file "d3dx9_43.dll," which is probably part of DirectX 9.

 Thanks, Ben, that seems to have done the trick.

It really is interesting playing through the game.  It's a lot like D&D, but with some interesting choices to differentiate from it.  I'm curious how much I would be able to approximate a D&D experience; that's really what I would be interested in.  Normally, I loathe the concept of spell points, but with the flexibility this engine offers, I could likely get around my prejudice in light of the greater diversity...

I got myself slaughtered in some kobold caves.  I think my strongest gripe right now is the whole "Death at 0 hit points" thing.  I never did like that way of playing the game.  You're either fully healthy or fully dead...

Still, the opportunity for growth in this engine is really promising!

Good to hear that it is working now. About the ruleset, it is mostly modeled after d20 with a few minor changes (like spell points). The system is flexible enough though that you could script your own system to not use SP and instead use something more like D&D. Also, the death system can be adjusted easily enough. Karl has already started a bleeding system so you are uncouncious at 0 and die at some negative value (losing hp per round while uncouncious unless made stable).
see here: http://ua.reonis.com/index.php?topic=2464.msg34010#msg34010
Again, that can all be scripted. If scripting is not your thing, not a problem. Just copy the scripts from someone else and place them in your module's script folder.

I hope you enjoy the engine+toolset. It is still very much a w.i.p. so any feedback and suggestions are appreciated.

Also, don't forget to hit "q" often (quicksave) just in case  ;)

Glad to hear you got it working, Ray!  No one is more shocked than me that I gave the right advice!   ;)
